OK well I was debating whether to put my ipod in the map comapartment or in the ashtray. Well the map compartment would have been nice for viewing angle but was a PITA to get the ipod in and out of the dock because of the compartment lid so I opted for the ashtray which worked beautifully. Here are a few pics of the progress and finished product.

Basically I cut the ashtry so that back part of it sits horizontally with the center consold(shifter area). I cut a pice of plastic out in the shape of the ashtray to use as a platform for the dock to sit on. I glued a piece of black felt to give iit an OEM look. The platform was glued to the ashtray with some Gorilla glue(home depot). I ordered a universal dock(white) from Ebay and spray painted it a matte black with a fine textured plastic paint. The back of the dock will accept the cable from the AudioLink module. The flip door of the ashtray was slightly modded at the rear underside so it opens about 1/8 of an inch more, not quite touching the dash to give a little more room for the iopd to lean back for better viewing. Overall I think it came out great is a an idel place ot put your ipod because wit the ipod out and door flipped closed it looks completely stock. If I ever sell the car all I need to do is order an ashtray from the dealer to completely put it back to stock.

Feel free to comment or ask questions about the install.

that's some nice, thick lush grass you got there. what kind is that? i've tried tall fescue and kentucky blue grass, but they don't hold up that well to a family and 2 dogs running around. plus, who has time to water the lawn? that grass of yours look thick and wide, they look like they'll hold up to 2 dogs running around.

I hate to interupt his answer, but it is St. Augustine. Very common in the south / southeast. Think of it as "domesticated crabgrass". It is pretty tough stuff, but it needs about 1" of water a week, so it might not be for you.

Plus, I'm not sure where you live, it might not grow there anyway.

did you add power to the dock?

no power required, basically the dock is just that a dock to hold the ipod, the ports on it are basically a pass-thru. The dock sits in the top and the cable that comes with the ipod to connect to a PC or in this case the AudioLink cable goes in the backside of the dock.

OK so I get the soldering done and install everything only to find out this dock doesn't have audio out through the ipod wiring only via the line out on the dock. So plan B is in play, I've ripped all the guts out of the dock itself and modified it to accept the plug that comes with the AudioLink unit. The glue is setting now and I'll shoot some pix later. I had a feeling something wasn't gonna go as smoothly as planned, oh well plab B should work and look just as nice.

I like your iPod install. I've got mine in a Belkin cup holder and wired through my arm rest. I bought a SiK adapter that plugs into the bottom of the iPod and provides power and audio, i.e. one connection.

I'd like to do this mod too. Looks like I'll have to plug the dock adapter plug into the back, and the audio into the audio port on the dock. I'll probably get the Apple dock and paint it black.

Any updates or pictures of your install DoubleD?

I know this thread is a little old, but I would like to see some pics too, if you have some.

Thanks.

Hey guys sorry for the late response. Yes you probably could have modded the space to keep the cig lighter but it would have been a tight squeeze with the size of the footprint of the dock itself. Here are a couple pix of that setup which I abondoned for a couple reasons, 1. It was hard to see the screen and 2. it was hard to navigate the ipod controls down there in front of the shifter and 3. I would always knock the ipod off the dock when putting the car in park. I now have it mounted on a Panavise mount just to the right of the center A/C vents(last pic) which is WAY easier to see and navigate.
