Rust proof coating - is it worth it?

My dealer suggested my getting the (forgive me if I'm describing this incorrectly) rust-proof coating for $1500. Is it worth it? I believe they coat the underbody of the car to reduce the possibility of rust developing. I live in chicago where it snows a lot... but I really dont have $1500 to spare as of right now. Did everyone else pretty much get this? Can i do it later in the winter, or is it better to do it now in case of rain?

Thanks

nope....when cars come off the factory, they already have it done. It's just a way for a dealership to make more money off of you. The actual worth of the product, the rust proof spray stuff, is like 20 bux. not worth it...save the money, get other goodies for your car.

yeah put the 1500 aside if your worried about it, and in 10 yrs when your car is rusted through take it and your $ to the body shop and let them fix it ;)

most cars now are rust resistant. The frames and bodies have drainage holes to prevent standing water.

Rust proofing often plugs the holes and prevents drainage, thus increasing the chance for standing water which can actually hasten rust.

All scams by the dealer to artifically inflate the price of a vehicle.

Don't fall for them.  If anything, most of these options cost the dealer less then 30 min of labor, and a 5 dollar can/bottle.[/b]
Agree completely, also in this neck of the world. Car salesmen everywhere try to make off commission to supplement what little they earn from selling the car alone. Actual options like grilles, Bose units, sunroof etc don't really earn them much as they're tightly controlled associated brand products. The money is in the 'after-market' stuff they try to make 'during-market' so to speak. They will cite convenience, one-stop fixed all crap at a cost to you, the buyer. In this case, 'rust-proofing' is now an unnecessary after-market product with what is now coming out of high-tech car factory.

Not to mention (as some have indicated) many of these "additional items" can actually do harm to the car.

Similar items include their "maintance packages". Some dealers throw these in for free (the decent ones) while others will charge 900+ USD for them.

Generally they include....

1) Free rotation/balancing of tires.
2) Inspection
3) Oil and Filter Changes
4) "Lubrication"
5) Fluid Checks.
6) Paint sealant
7) Free wash with each visit

Sounds good right?

1) Most tire places (if you purchase replacement tires) offer free rotation/balancing for the life of the tires. So if you replaced the tires at a place like costco...you wouldn't need this function.

2) The Service Department is supposed to do this anyway. If anything they do this TOO much...sometimes replacing components that anywhere near worn out. Much like the normal lube shops...

"You should replace your air filter"
"Its only got 3,000 miles on it"

3) Decent if you can't be bothered with doing your own changes. (Which are utterly simple on this car...cept for the first filter change). However this usually will fall under the normal service intervals, and usually has a set limit. (Like 1 change per 7500 miles). As always with dealer/quick lube oil changes, you need to make sure their actually being done, and that the correct oil/filter is being used.

Always put a sharpie mark on your filter before you take it in for service. Check for the sharpie mark before you drive off the lot.

4) All the suspension components on this car are sealed with est of 100,000 miles for the primary ball joints/control arms. The only lubrication thats done is on the door, hood, and trunk hinges.

5) You can see your brake/coolant levels just by glancing in your car. Oil, tranny and power steering is simple to check, just follow your manuals instructions.

6) If the car is fresh from the factory, this can actually be harmful. Paint needs a good month or so to cure usually before its supposed to be waxed. (Which is basically what the paint sealant is)

7) Some dealers use harsh methods when washing which can scratch the clearcoat. Always a risk.

There is another benefit to the "rustproofing" or undercoating nobody has mentioned. It is a very effective sound deadner. Road noise and vibration is greatly dampened by this rubberized material. I don't recommend letting the dealer do it though, they will just take it to Ziebart and charge you extra. Take it to Ziebart yourself. They also don't tell you that to keep the 10 yr warranty in force, you have to take the car back every year for a re-application at an additional ~$40. The rustproofing aspect is only a benefit to you if you plan to keep the car a long time.

Don't be stupid. This is an absolute scam. You should do the following.

1. Run...don't walk away from the dealer. Given the size and the amount of the scam he is trying to pull here, you can be certain that he will do something else dishonest to you either now or down the road.

2. Call the authorities. This sounds illegal.

3. Ask him to document the exact number of hours that it will take to do this as well as the complete cost of all the raw materials consumes. Tell him to show you the invoices for the raw materials consumed and tell him that you will pay him double whatever the raw materials cost....I bet that the cost is not even 1500 cents!!

Seriously, you should get away from this dealer as soon as possible. This goes beyond normal 'negotiations', etc. He is being extremely dishonest with you. You should think of him and treat him like the thief that he is!!

nonsense, adding a rubber coating only allows a way of trapping salty water against the cars surface and promoting corrosion!! if you want a super quiet car, buy a Mercedes

I can't believe they're still trying to offer rustproofing as an option. This procedure can actually encourage rust if drainage holes are clogged up. This is an old very-profitable scam that dealers used to do.

I owned a Mazda 626 for 11 years from new, this was used daily in the UK where they use SALT on the roads to keep them ice/frost free and I never had any rust at all.
So I would not bother.

In Alaska, home of crappiest roads on earth. (I think it's in our tourist marketing.) We salt, sand, and use every variety of unknown chemicals on our roads. I haven't seen anything but 20-year old Subarus and Ford Aerostars rust.

The dealerships don't even offer it but they will sell you carwash packages for cheap! Our carwash places are competitive--plus it gets people to wash/detail their cars in the winter.
