GT2871 or GT3071?

When does the GT3071 spool? , 2871?

I like the fast spool time of the stocker, and I do have methanol injection. So im thinking between the 2 i can have the best of both worlds with the GT2871R, but i dont want to sell my self short. I would like to hit somewhere between 350-400WHP.

What do you guys think?

First off, 400whp on this stock block would probably be in the danger zone.

But if you are shooting in the upwards of 350+ go w/ the 3076.

A nice safe tune and supporting mods should get you there.

I got the 3071 being installed within the next few weeks w/ the CPE PnP.

yeah i wasnt planning on building my engine

GT28 ftw.

Ditto.

Build for the rpm range you will actually use. For driving in traffic as a daily driver, little engine, big turbo ===> dyno queen.
If you are building a DD not a race car, look to torque first, in particular under 4500 rpm. A great number at 6500 makes for a nice board post but will be useless in daily driving. For a daily driver, the old saw is "People buy horsepower and drive torque".

I've been thinking for a few weeks that someone who is "in the know" needs to write up a comparison of the three turbos (2871,3071, and 3076) and it needs to be a sticky. Since I am definitely not in the know with this, I will respectfully bow down and let others chime in, or start another thread. HINT HINT

edit: also, just noticed this. All the people so far that have recommended turbo's have a different turbo on their car than what they recommended. You might want to take that into consideration.

I think it would be a good idea MS-SPD6.

I thought a bigger turbo would be better for me because I do a lot of city driving and since it takes longer to spool, I thought that I would stay out of boost more often driving around town and it would be there in the upper rpms when I needed it. Plus, I'm not the kind of person to try to pass some one in 5th or 6th gear under 2500 rpms. I'm the type of person that downshifts to get the turbo spooling, then pass someone =). The only time I would pass someone in the lower revs is on the interstate, which the tach normally stays a 3grand or higher anyway.

jb, don't you have the 71, right? Have you built your motor yet? I seen in the other thread you said you run 19psi daily. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Didn't someone say that they had full boost at 4k, from the 71?or was it the 76? Bigger turbo guys want to chime in

Keep in mind that the gt2871 became available relatively recently. If anything, this should factor in even more towards getting a gt28, as they already have experience with the lag from a gt30.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to flame or make the other guys look bad, I was just wanting to point out that the guys that have experience with the larger turbos are recommending the gt2871.

Sorry if it came across wrong!

I have not built my motor yet. Thankfully my car has held up quite well, but I have just not had the cash or time to install new rods.

As for spool-up, here are a couple vids I made a while back (sorry for the $hitty quality...):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xSwUDm48xl8
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zVMUL-SXq7c

Both of those vids I begin at around 3500rpm and don't make full boost until ~4300. However if I go WOT while cruising at 2500-3000 I will see full boost before 4000.

Is that a CEL I see???

i love my turbo. 2871. but for 400 hp you may wanta go bigger[/b]
when do you hit full boost in 3rd? I think it's about 3800 with a 3071.

3071 has larger tubine vs 2871 .. better for ET and top end power at high boost. But response from 2871 should be better.

anyone know the turbine (and compressor) major diameters on the stock turbo?

That's where I'm trying to get at. I think that it would be a good turbo for me. It all depends on where you (OP) want your boost to come on at and how much power your looking to achieve. The 76 will spool a little bit later than that.

Skippy, what would you say the difference is between your 28 than the k04

All of you guys are getting ahead of yourselves:)

There are significant issues with the ecu in our car that is seriously handicapping the big boy mods ability to shine.

Save your money for a bit more and wait for a reflash and these turbos will make a ton of sense....hopefully.

Thats a GT3076, not a 71 (see anti-surge ports).

3071 vs k04:

Anyone know where i can get a custom oil drain feed line to use? Im going to get the ms3 bolton GT2871R and i can either use the stock MS6 one which i heard is a pain in the ass or get a custom setup, but i have no idea what i need to do that

Do the kits designed for the MS6 have the correct oil drain feed line? I was thinking i could have whoever i buy the turbo from get ahold of one of those from ATP

#21 ·
jackson, go to any speed shop and get a braided line.
Oh nad why get the kit for the ms3. i thought i saw a kit for us someplace

as for the spool time. um its around 3500 i never really stare at my boost gauge. in 1st and second it will come on real quick. the difference between the ko4 and the 2871 is like night and day. As for dynos. Im hopefully going to the dyno next weekend to get ti tuned using the standback. soo Ill have one then . although i still dont have my tubular turbo mani yet :( I really want the HFFP too by next week. well i kinda think i really need one

Skippy where on the Island are you?

ATP doesnt advertise the "bolt on" turbo for the MS6. Only the ones that require their downpipe. the only change they would need to make to make it 100% MS6 compatible is change the oil return setup.. If im not mistaken the non-bolt on kit for the MS6 comes with the correct one so i dont know why they dont advertise the MS6 Bolt on.

Doesnt really make sense i know other than that everything works fine.

#24 ·
they want to sell there down pipe :) hehe i dont know but anywho. i got the turbo from protege garage. everything else can be fabbed up for real cheap.

im from Babylon, LI

I ordered the turbo from protege garage as well! (and got a kick ass deal too!) Although i did buy a bunch of other stuff from earlier them at full price so they kind of gave me a retroactive "package deal".

They said they were going to call ATP and see if they could get the MS6 oil lines instead of the MS3 lines on my MS3 bolt-on GT2871R!

Thanks Zack!

Now i just need to fab a turbo inlet pipe to go from my CP-E CAI 2.75" ?? to the 4" GT2871R turbo inlet

keep us posted on whether they hook you up with MS6 oil lines, I may be going in this direction in the future also
