Hi

I have a Mazda6(2004)(6i)(manual)(68K miles)

I regularly have the Synthetic oil change every 5K miles.

From past 3 days I am seeing this ENGINE CHECK LIGHT ON and it never goes off. Usually in the past
it happened 2-3 times where the light is ON for 1 day and goes OFF automatically. But this time
that's not the case - its ON from past 3 days.

1) What is the best thing to do ?

2) Is there something which I can do myself to see if its a minute error and fix myself ?

3) Are there any tools out which I can get in Autozone or any shop which I can hookup and see
what error codes is this car giving out ?

Thanks in advance.

You need to purchase an OBD II/CAN BUS code reader so that you can find out what code you have. Autozone sometimes does this for free. If not them then there are other companies that will read it for free. some code readers will just give you the code number and some will give you the number and what the code is.

A common CEL can be triggered by the gas cap not being on tight (make sure it clicks tight). If the gas cap is loose then tighten and give a few days to clear itself. If the gas cap is tight, then head to auto zone to get a (usually free) scan.

I just went to AUTOZONE and they did a scan and gave me error code : P0128[/b]
You likely have a failed(open) thermostat. The code says the engine has not reached operating temperature/running too cool for conditions.

I just checked my GAS cap and turned it tight to make 2-3 clicks and closed it.
Do I have to wait for few days and see if its because of gas cap or something else ?

No that is not the problem...you would have gotten a code related the the evap vent. Your error code is a P0128, you have a problem with the thermostat. Im surprised the auto zone guys didnt try to sell you one on the spot.

It was a lady in autozone who was doing the scan for me.
She looked at the tires first and started selling me the brake pads and rotors and forgot
to help me fix what this error code is.

Is it related to THERMOSTAT only ?

Can I change it myself ?
