The dealer did it with no questions asked on my 2006 6s. It's a dashboard programming thing they have to do with the WDS computer.

I'm hoping the same holds true for my 2015 Touring, I'll find out this coming week when I take it in.

And before the flaming starts, I've always worn my seat belt, I just hate the damn thing going off before I can even get it fastened.

 

I just use a blank seat belt clicker. I went to a local Pick-A-Part and I just buckle a blank in without a strap if I don't feel like wearing mine.

 

You may not even need the dealer to do it. I remember I turned it off on my Subaru in the driveway. It's usually some convoluted sequence like buckle and unbuckle 20x, turn the car on, buckle and unbuckle 20x, turn car off. Not positive on Mazda, but it's a fairly common thing to do by yourself.

 

I do it by bucking up...

I am waiting to go in for my car check up to get the dealership to do it. Thats what the manual says. Just turn the music up for now and it will drown it out.

 

Probably a good idea to just buckle up. I just came back into a Mazda because I totaled my Ford. I have a feeling the seatbelt saved me from more serious injuries. I walked away with a bruised shoulder and whiplash. Go check out my post in the Newbie Section for pics.

Personally I like my freedom, I don't need a chime to remind me to buckle up I will buckle up when I want to. Most of the time I wear my seatbelt.

 

It should be noted, that per your state laws of New York (previous post stated you live on Long Island) it is illegal to drive or be a passenger and not wear your seat belt.

 

Good luck with getting the dealership to turn it off.

I wear it all the time, dont need a reminder. Just take it off as im pulling into my parking space for quick getaway speed. Slightly annoying if its something I can get changed.

I disable mind because I was tired of it going Off an shit in my car move it sometimes.and sit in it..i Always use but sometimes its annoying in situations you can unplug it from under the seat

 

Does that somehow disable your airbags? Can't imagine it would, but what if airbags are only deployed to a seat with a seatbelt *detected* ?

 

Visited my selling dealer today, was very disappointed with their attitude and the seeming run-around I got with the seat belt chime issue.
First answer I got was "we can't do that, it's illegal"
My answer, no it's not
Second answer was "You might sue us if you got into an accident"
Hard to logically argue with that kind of paranoid answer, so I just told them to bring the car around and I'd find another dealer who wasn't such a pussy.
Finally, when the service guy delivered my car, he told me that he had talked to "the tech" who said it simply wasn't possible to do on the new models, so I should save my time trying to get another dealer to do it.
He reminded me of my son when he was a little kid and would get caught in a lie about doing something and came up with a dozen different answers one after another.
So, the answer is there doesn't appear to be an answer. I do still speak to the guy who was the service manager at the dealer I bought my 2006 6s from, even though he's no longer working for Mazda. I might look him up and ask if he has any friends or contacts at Mazda that can give an honest answer.

I know some cars adjust the airbag if the seatbelt isn't used. So the airbag won't kill/hurt you. Not sure if that is the case for the drivers seat in the M6 though. But I would look into it before tricking the car into thinking the seatbelt is attached when it isn't.

 

Agreed. The whole seatbelt/airbag system is quite intertwined. I'd hate to find out the hard way that tricking the seatbelt system wasn't a good idea.

I'll mention again that I'm not an advocate of driving anywhere without wearing your seatbelt, but I don't need a damn annoying chime going off in my ear before I can even get the damn thing fastened. Often I have grandkids in the back seat and they sometimes need help getting buckled in. As soon as I unfasten my belt to reach around and help them, there's the damn chime again. It's just an unnecessary annoyance to me, that's why I had it disabled in my '06 and why I want it to go away in my 2015. That shouldn't be too much to ask............

 

So, quick update:
Took my 2015 Touring in for a few minor things, on the list was to disable the seat belt chime.
Got every excuse they could find.
- It's illegal
(no it's not)
- If you got into an accident and were injured you would sue us.
(it would be a baseless lawsuit)
Finally when I said I'll just find someone else who will do it for me, when the service writer (young kid) came back to tell me the car was ready he explained that he had "talk to the tech" and was told that it simply wasn't possible to do on the new models.
I guess he ran out of plausable excuses. I'm researching thru another friend who is a former Mazda service manager if it is indeed possible.
I hate being bullshitted.

 

i wouldn't however i know how to and i'm here to help, there is what appears to be heat shrink tubing going into your buckle cut that when it's opened connect the two wires and cover it with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape, all your doing is closing the circuit, i don't know how Mazda buckles operate but i figure that when you click it in place it closes a circuit that tells the ECU that your buckled

 

Seat Belt Chime Time

I want to stay on subject here but an adult should have the option whether or not he/she chooses to wear a seat belt. I personally buckle up all the time but it should not be illegal to drive unbuckled. If you have a family you have a responsibility to them to stay alive and not wearing a seat belt is like saying you don't give a shit about their future well being. Anyway, I sometimes unbuckle once I've turned off the main road and am in my neighborhood and noticed after about 20-30 "chimes" the dinging stops. Not sure if it starts again after a minute or so because I'm usually backed into my driveway by then, but I just wanted to chime in so to speak on my observation.

The chime doesn't go off until the car is moving and only after a certain speed at that (5 mph or so). If the chime is annoying you, it is doing its designed and intended job. Your life and safety are too precious, why gamble them just for a darn chime. C'mon, with all due respect. Plus you're setting the example to your grandkids, buckle up.

Yeah, this was what was going through my head to be honest. Not sure if the new ones work the same, but on my 06 it doesn't start chiming until you hit 10mph. If you stop and unbuckle, I've never had it make a sound at that point either....so if your moving and your grand kids are buckled in you should probably stop the car.

 

Yeah, plus it won't do the children any good if, GOD FORBID, the kids are safely buckled-up in the back when granpa is out cold in the front due to not being buckled-up. Let's not forget that statistics have always said that most vehicular accidents happen within 5 miles from home, even at low speeds. Plus if the insurance company ever reads this thread...

I personally prefer not to wear a sh*tbelt, I just find it way too uncomfortable. I am actually looking forward to testing my air bag igniters at some point in the future...maybe this weekend.
I drive alone 95% of the time and am very grateful for the new wave of dashcams available for private citizens to use, because, other drivers inevitably lie when it is their fault.
I have been in numerous accidents with and without seatbelt engaged and have found little to no difference in my injuries. I consider it a matter of preference. Just call it my rebellion against the nanny state.
I travel all over the world and whether there are laws about it or not, 80% of taxis abroad do not even have working seatbelts even if you wanted to use them. So what do you do? Wait a 4 hours to find a taxi that has an operational seatbelt? Not likely. Somehow they still manage to have massive overpopulation.
If your life is so precious and incomparable that the word cannot survive without your biological functions on the planet, then I suggest you just stay indoors for the rest of your life. I hate to break it to you, but the unfortunate truth is that we are all expendable.
I am so sick and tired of hearing about how we have to sacrifice choices for the 1 in a million situation, from seatbelts to bathroom choice. I'm just sick of being told what's best for ME. I'll make that choice myself, thank you very much.
I have no doubt that my conjuncting of the words "seat belt" and "dash cam" have set off immeasurable discomfort for many of you readers. That's just how affected you are...stop trying to control me...I have no strings!
