Hey everyone, I tried changing the driver's side headlight bulb for my g/f and as soon as i removed the cover of where the bulb is located I noticed the projector fell out of the housing.... (pic from outiside below to show what I mean)

I was able to get my hand in there and line it back up and everything but it doesn't stay where its supposed to in the housing--- does it snap in some how? how does the projector fit inside of the housing???

Please dont tell me I need a whole new headlight fixture!??!

Anyway--- please help me figure out how to fix this--- or at least where to start looking?? I started reading about having to remove the whole fixture, and I dont really want to go through all that work unless I have to...

can someone shine some light on the internal anatomy of that headlight fixture? What can I do?

Thanks!

if i remember correctly, the projector is actually secured by multiple screws. so the fact that it actually fell out means either it wasn't screwed in, or the tabs broke off.

you're gonna have to take off your bumper, and remove the headlight itself to be able to double check. And if it wasn't screwed in, you'll have to bake open your headlight to fix it (unless you have really small hands and can screw it in through that tiny hole). If the tabs are broken and it can't be screwed in again, you'll have to get a new projector (most likely off ebay or someone on here who has retrofitted their headlights). Last resort is to buy a new headlight.

but maybe someone who is more knowledgable in the headlight fixture can chime in and tell me that i am wrong.

the projector is screwed on a bracket that pops into some pegs allows us to adjust the aiming of the projectors. i think the bracket came off those pegs in this case. if the car is still under warranty, bring it to the dealer for a resolution. if you're not covered anymore, then you're going to have to bake the headlight to open up the housing and fix it.

or you can buy a headlight off ebay, which is still quite expensive...

if you check out all the retrofit threads (one is a sticky, the other one you can search for "tsx" and "retrofit") there are a bunch of pictures of the inside of the headlight housing.

ok so it turns out the car is under warranty.

how do i explain how this happened? do i tell them that I was trying to change the bulb and this happened? I just know from my experience with my car that the dealer finds every way they can to make u pay for things rather than fix them under warranty. so any suggestions on how to explain and deal with the dealer?

just tell them that your driver's side light went out and went to check it....and notice that the projector was broken/unmounted. I wouldn't even mention that you tried to changed the lights yourself. Make sure the original bulb is in place.[/b]
ok thanks for the reply--- sounds like a plan---- any other suggestions?

make sure the service manager, not just the mechanic, confirms and agree that ALL repairs/parts/labor are 100% covered by your warranty contract..not some other warranty terms they also offer... Best to have it in witting before you agree to the work to be done. It's all about the details.

Afterward inspect your entire car and not just the previous problem to make sure that things were done right the first time. As always, if you are displease with the job, don't hesitate to let them know and demand a re-work ASAP (at their cost, of course).

+1 on putting the original bulb back and making sure it looks like you didn't even touch the projector.

ok so turns out, that the car isn't under a factory mazda warranty or a certified warranty.

Its an aftermarket extended warraanty and surprise surprise it doesn't cover the headlight.

So back to square one.

I've been looking around on ebay but man they are still pretty expensive!

Tomrorrow evening I'll start taking the bumper/light out. So i'll be looking for those DIY's that you all refered me to...

I posted in the classified's section arleady, but shameless plug--- if anyone is looking to sell their OEM headlight to me, please let me know!!!

--Thanks.

can someone tell me if the light i posted above has a fog light?

I know the car doesn't have a switch to turn any kidna fog light on or off. but i'm trying to order a 'reconditioned light' and they wanna know if its the light with fog light or without, and i'm 99% sure its without.

can someone confirm for me really quick?

Thanks!

Very hard for me to tell in that pic. If there is a bulb next to your turn signal (not the headlight) then that is the fog light.

What year is your car? That would probably be the easiest way to tell you if you have fogs in your headlight fixture or not.

the car is a 2004, 4cyl. I wanna say its a pretty low end model. Power window/locks/drivers seat--- pretty much it for luxuries. I dont knwo the exact trim level though. No sunroof etc... 16" alloys.

Dunno if that helps.

Theres a verrry little bulb where the high beam light is that casts kinda a glow on that part of the fixture when the headlight is on. (not the high beam bulb) --- is that the "fog light"?

Nope that is the driving/parking light. Sounds like you don't have a fog light. It would be in between the turn signal and the parking light. If you don't have fog lights it will just be a chrome "dome"

Good Luck!

OK guys,

Well, I took the fixture out and I decided to replace it with one from ebay becuase I dont trust my ability to open and reseal this thing properly without damaging it.

So as a result, I'm selling the old (broken) one in an effort to recoup at least SOME of my money beacuse a replacement one wasn't cheap!

I put it up for sale on e-bay just incase anyone is interested---

thanks for all your help!
