Takes about 1-1.5hours, depending on your skill level and if you have a CAI (otherwise you have to move the airbox). The trickest part is probably re-assembling the hood latch when you hook up the cooler. That and removing the grill w/o breaking the tabs.

Also... go to Lowes and get some pipe foam insulator (use it to wrap the hose when it goes around the bend, good safety precaution IMO).

A Master tech I spoke with said the trans recirculates fluid until it's up to 160 degrees so you shouldn't need one since it would self regulate. A temp gauge is a good idea though.[/b]

ya just got a response from there tech support and they said

Yes, the tru-lpd 4452 is a self-regulating cooler so if the fluid is not warm enough, it passes through the first two plates of the cooler until it warms up.

thanks every one for the help

I'm speaking about the transmission itself doesn't pass fluid through the external hoses until it is warm enough. The Mazda tech said to put the biggest cooler I could on there and use Synthetic fluid and never look back. He has a standing bet with a local shop owner on a truck transmission that he finally convinced to install a cooler on (if this trans dies like the first two, he'd replace it free of labor). He has only seen him for the usual atf flush and oil changes ever since.

I've been wanting to do this on my '06 6i. has anyone had any problem with the dealers trying to deny warranty service because of the cooler?

oh ok. im pretty sure it wont die now with the cooler. i was wondering if it matters if the cooler hoses point up or down?

No matter how big you get it'll only get closer to ambient temp. Also, you don't want to over-cool the fluid, 160 degrees is the target temp so once it gets effing freezing out you may have to bypass the cooler or cover some of the fins so you don't over-cool the fluid. This is why you need a temp gauge.
