Oil light comes on occasionally, but oil level is fine...?

Hey everyone, I have a problem that is seriously worrying me. On a recent trip, the oil light on my 2004 Mazda 6 wagon started flickering. It was mainly on inclined/sloped terrain, and usually went away once the car was moving on relative even roads. Fearing a sudden breakdown, I parked at the nearest lot. I checked the oil and it read somewhere close to the middle of the two marks on the dipstick. I topped off the oil and the oil light went away.

Unfortunately, the light started flickering again during today's morning commute. I checked the oil level again after work and it's at the top mark, the same as when I topped off the oil. I did some searching, but most of what I've found is related to severe oil loss/consumption, which doesn't seem to be the case here. Does anyone have any idea why my car's oil light would be acting like this?

synthetic or conventional oil? mileage of your 04? PCV changed at all? any blue smoke? any sludge from lack of oil change? how often do you change your oil? which oil weight do you use? you don't check your oil while the car is running do you and did you check it on level ground while the car is warm(5min after shut-off) ?

sorry for all the questions in one reply, just trying to make sure every possible thing i can think of is covered. our bearings are sensitive to low oil, get it right FAST!!!

Conventional 5w20 oil. Car was purchased with about 79000 miles on it and now has ~81000. I changed the PCV less than 1000 miles ago. No smoking or sludge that I can tell. Oil was changed right after purchase. The oil level has been checked during several conditions - a few minutes after driving, about 45 minutes to an hour after driving, and after many (8+) hours of sitting. Oil level has never been checked while the car is running (hopefully no one ever does that) but always when shut off and on fairly level ground. The oil level has always shown to be somewhere between the halfway and top mark of the dipstick.

Whew, think that's it... if you have any ideas, feel free to share!

for peace of mind, i'd change it right now to see how much i get in the drain pan-cost, maybe $22 max , using conventional oil, vs $1000+for a new motor! also remove your oil cap to see if its nice and clean or gunky black stuff on your internals.

mine never does that and i went as long as 4,000miles without oil change, but i kept an eye on my level especially since i'm getting closer to 100,000 miles. right now at 97,500 miles.

ok, so you're past me in mileage. i never heard of a Mazda 6 with oil pump failure, so i didnt want to go that route with dianosis. hopefully everything is ok

Ouch man, that almost hurts to watch  I hope my motor isn't going down the same path. Don't know anything about swapping the motor, but good luck with all that!

Anyway, thanks for the input everyone. I'll get the oil changed tomorrow morning and see if that changes anything. I'll update over the weekend with hopefully good news...

Changed the oil yesterday, but the oil light still came on occasionally. I noticed that it only lit up when I was at a stop or was coasting at low RPMs. After some research, I found that this seems to be a case of a faulty oil pressure switch. I replaced the switch earlier today and the oil light hasn't turned on since!

Thank you to everyone for adding you input. Luckily for me, my problem turned out to be relatively minor. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to be so lucky with their cars :( I'll make sure to keep an eye on my engine just in case.

Mine did the same thing. Oil Light flickering. It did it if I sat in line for awhile and at low idle.

REplaced oil sending unit and replaced leaky oil pan gasket, cleaned screen in pick up tube in oil pan.
Went to 5-30

No more oil flickering.

Now it is valve cover leaking and misfire on number 6. That is for a different thread.
