Need some advice about transmission and fumes issue

I bought a 2013 Mazda 6 2.2d in September. It had 230,000km on it, with no service book and I didn't know much about it (I know, bad choice, but a Mazda 6 was one of my dream cars as a kid, so it was an impulse). While I have taken care of it, it developed a few issues which I quickly fixed and kept up with servicing and using quality parts for it.

I now have developed an issue with fumes coming out of somewhere, but have absolutely no idea where. It's coming from the right-hand side of the engine compartment (around where the battery is). I tried finding it while it was running but to no avail. I brought it to a mechanic who spent 5 hours with a bottle of soap and water trying to find the leak but to no avail, but ruled out the EGR. It seems to only happen for about 30 seconds to a minute when the car starts and when the car starts up by the iStop. Has anyone had this issue, or are there any ideas?

I know these cars have a lifetime ATF. But now that my car is approaching 240,000kms, I feel it is beneficial to change it, simply for my own peace of mind. While I have no intention to initiate the age ol' ATF brand debate, is there an issue with me using Valvoline ATF? My nearest Mazda dealer is over an hour away and I can get Valvoline ATF substantially nearer. Along with changing out the ATF, is there a benefit of changing out the filter, or can I leave this and just do a drain and fill?

I strongly suggest using the OEM transmission fluid. I had mine replaced although I'm only at 51,xxx km. I also have the diesel variant.

@tickerguy has a good explanation why you should stick with OEM transmission fluid.
