hesitation in acceleration.

About a month ago, I had a tune up done on my car, where the spark plugs were replaced and air filter changed. After that the car ran as good as it ever has. It was quicker and when you stepped on the gas it went immediately. Now this slight hesitation is coming back, where whenever you step on the gas it will take a full second to accelerate. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Car history: 2003 6s. Transmission replaced in '06. Various o2 and knock sensor issues in '06 & '07. Throttle positioning sensor replaced last October, to correct a MAJOR hesitation issue.

1) This has been brought up many times!

2) Clean you MAF sensor, $6 for the CRC brand in any auto store.

3) Reset your ECU by taking off your battery cable, it will relearn with the clean MAF.

4) Spend the money to get a blitz throttle controller. Its spendy but works great, I have an ATX and it has no hesitation at all with it and throttle response is excellent. (Do a search on it, there is a big thread).

Hope that helps.

thanks, that was very helpful. i will clean the MAF and look into the throttle controller. ($300! wow!)

I'm wondering if my problem is similar. I've been noticing a lot lately that when i take off from a complete stop, my car feels like it wants to stall. I'm not sure what the hell is going on.

In your case, get the throttle body cleaner as well. Unplug & unbolt your TB if you have already done the coolant bypass and then clean out the TB wipe down the butterfly plate and work in the cleaner into the joints (directions on the can). Do not use MAF cleaner on the throttle body. The TB spray is a cleaner and a lube, MAF cleaner is just a cleaner.

I have about 49500 miles on the car and the dealer cleaned the throttle body at about 46000 miles. I don't see why I would need to clean it out again. They cleaned it out because I had the car stall on me a couple times while i was slowing down.

that's what happened to me last summer, come to find out i needed a new TB and had an air hose leak or something, i'd have to look at the invoice.

edit: it was a split air intake boot.

Maybe I should take it to the dealer tomorrow then. That would give me a good enough excuse to get an OTB.

I just got back from the dealer and they said cylinders 4 and 6 were misfiring so they replaced the coils.[/b]

I had the same problem, after the dealer changed my TB, IM, MAF and new plugs it still did it. I found that i had a Spark Plug Gasket Leak. Check your plugs to see if you have oil in them..

The weird thing is I never had a engine light.

I hope they would have told me if there was oil on my spark plugs, but i guess you can only trust them as far as you can throw them.

This may be a stupid question, but which cylinders are 4 and 6? Are they on the front or the back (easy ones to change or hard ones)?

I am reading up and my hesitation is happening when going up a small hill, sometimes when going in reverse, but most times just going from 2nd to 3rd in my atx.

Its not my TB (cleaned the Optimized one and also have a TB Spacer as well) or MAF, cleaned both, the vacuum line is fine not cuts in the SRI elbows.

Now reading a few threads, can it be clogged cats or like some said or a spark plug gasket leak?

For us, no CEL whatsoever.

i had the same problem and just seafoamed, cleaned the TB, MAF, and changed the spark plugs. Now my car responses better and rides smoother.[/b]
How many miles you have before you changed out your sparks?

So what happened man? Spark plug gasket leak sounds serious. Did you change the gaskets? Did it help the acceleration problem?

Same thing happened to me. Hesitation in third gear. Had to replace the coils on my car. Warranty would only pay for one replacement, so a few months later another coil went and I had to get that one replaced too, to the tune of over $800!!! If you're going to get one replaced, pay to get them all replaced!!! BTW - the stealership was going to charge me $1400 to replace them. I went to Mr. Tire and they did it for just over half the cost.

Well it turned out my one of the back three ignition coils were bad. There is no real way to tell but to test out one by one without a CEL. So my mechanic just swapped the back three and its back to her old self. But because I still have a AAA warranty, so all the coils where replaced with a 50 bux deductible FTW! After cleaning the OTB and performing the TB bypass, cleaning the air filter and MAF while I was there, the car is way more peppy than I recall. Maybe its in my head, but it feels great to zoom-zoom again :).

So to all who have this issue, NO CEL, hesitation whenever the car climbs uphill, or/and with the AC on, check your coils. And check for vacuum leaks on both the intake tube (accordion tube for the AEM peeps) and also the vacuum line that is directly behind the TB. You have to take apart the TB to get a real good look with a flashlight.

Hope you got the problem solved, but if not,
If they were messing with stuff under the hood, they could have forgotten to tighten an air hose. That happened to me once, and caused a similar problem (delayed acceleration). When i checked, the air hose basically fell off.
