Cold Door Close Issue

Here in CT this AM it was -3F when I went out to start up olde blue. We have had cold snaps in the past couple weeks, but none quite like this one. This AM my drivers side door would just not shut. Apparantly 0F is about the breaking point for the hard closing drivers door to close. After a few minutes of warm up, I was able to get the door shut. My drivers door seems to be the only one that I have this problem with? My fiancees 6i does not do this, but I know other 6 owners on this site have mentioned it. Is there anything that can be done to fix the problem? Friday AM is supposed to go as low as -10F! I am concerned that if I take this problem to the dealer, they can make it better when the temps are bitter cold like this but will loosen things up for when the temps get warmer. I would love to know what others have done if anything and how it worked out. Thanks!

In MA, had the same problem. I now know to check that the door closes. However, if I give it a hard enough shot, it closes.

Happened to me, too. My 6S was parked outside overnight for 3 days. This morning, temps were down between -4 and -20 C. Opened the driver-side passenger and driver-side door. Both would not close fully. Warmed the engine up and ran the heater in defrost/leg mode. Eventually, the doors warmed up enough so the cam could engage...

I have no idea what grease/lubricant to use on the door. Whatever Mazda is using now, I don't think is good enough for sub-zero temps...

Exactly what I have to do.

Hmm, I haven't had this issue. However, related to cold, I'm noticing a lot more... for lack of a better word... creaking... like I now hear some noise around the moonroof, and some more than usual noise on the doors.

MZ6, I have been very impressed with the fit and finish of this car so far in this VERY cold snap. All of my other cars were MUCH more effected by the cold than my 6, so far that is, we will see how it ages. I think ALL cars are effected by extreme temps.

Yup, I've noticed this issue - but only in temperatures below -25C. It just requires a harder slam to get the door to shut when it's that cold outside.

At -3F I couldn't get mine to close slamming it in a comfortable manner.................

Funny thing, I've noticed this too here in San Diego. The temps have been falling near freezing at night in the past couple of weeks. Although I have had no problem getting the doors closed, it has been taking quite a bit more effort to close, especially the rear doors.

That has been happening to me a lot these past few weeks, esp. because I live at the beach I get a lot of frosty ice layering over my car because of the sound. I find that a good ol slam does the trick, but if its frozen, you need to give it a few minutes to warm up.:D

Same thing happening here this morning in 1 F cold.. I need to give it a few good hard tries before it engages. I've owned a few Toyotas and another Mazda, and they all did this. I think it's a Japanese car issue.

I had a 2003 Olds Alero and it never had a problem in 0 degree temps. American designed vehicles seem to handle the cold better.

Also, my brakes are squealing like crazy in this 5 degree weather. Whenever I hit the brakes (i.e for a stop light), the brakes will squeal just as my speedometer falls below 5MPH. It's happening all the time now, whereas it was happening only once in a while in parking lots, as others have experienced. My car only has 9000 miles. I hope I don't need new brakes already.

See my guess is that the Japaneese cars are built to tighter tolorances and when certain things contract, this problem is created. That is just a guess.

As far as the brakes go, I have the exact same thing on my 6. You don't need new brakes. I guess this is just how they react to the extreme cold. This morning I was noticing many other cars that were doing the same exact thing (specifically a Camry and a Maxima) On my old cars (both Probe GTs), the rear brakes used to houl something fierce on a really cold morning when getting to a stop. When the temp went back to warm the brakes quieted right down.

Mark-

Is that Canada only? I just called my dealership last week and they told me the problem is normal and there is nothing they can do about it. If they have access to this TSB, I'm going to go to the dealership and take a shit on the service manager's desk. I had to tell them about the "staining" TSB, and now this? Why do *I* have to find all the TSBs for this dealership? I've had 7 cars (6 of them Japanese) in Minnesota and none of them did this.

This TSB is for all 03 Mz6's..come to think of it do the call the Canadian model a 03?

Shouldn't matter. Just have the Service guy order the upgraded parts.

Hey I don't know the deal with the local...just lazy I guess.

Probably deleted the E-mail along with the viagra ads.

:zzz

frozen at the beach? it MUST be cold then because sea air will not freeze as easily as it will inland because of the higher salt concentration. would it work to manually work the door latch with a screw driver or something to loosen it up?

As far as I know, all of the north american 6's were built in Flat Rock MI, to the same spec I would think.

MZ6i - I would make that a BIG **** on the service managers desk if this is the second time you've had to inform them about a TSB.

MARKPMM - thanks very much for the info!

you might want to "coach" a bit.

Give them a shout a couple days out. Tell them you might have a problem and a solution..

Give them this information,
