Following up on this issue, it still happens randomly. My local Mazda dealer's Service Dept. refuses to attempt a repair since "it doesn't happen when we drive it around." It's still under warranty for another 3,000 miles so time is running out. Please help if you can!

Not quite familiar with our car yet and buying my car without the manual, I've had this similar issue with a different car. It's going to most likely be the mechanism that switches the vents from defrost to face/feet, etc..

If it is vacuum controlled, there may be a loose in pressure on the hose/line/system that controls the vents. When pressure it lost, it opens to face; w/ pressure it opens to defrost, etc..

If it is electronically controlled, it is very tricky and annoying to fix as all electrical problems are. Best make your dealership do it before your warranty. My best guess would be that our system is electronically controlled and is losing a connection or corrosion somewhere. For example, bumps in the roads cause a lost in connection contact with the servo motors causing the servo to open/close changing the vent positions.

 

OP, is your climate control set to Auto mode?

 

Yes, it sounds like it's functioning in auto mode...changing vents based on cabin temp, ambient temp, solar load, etc.

Also, it's very hard for the dealer technician to fix something if he can't duplicate your issue. Maybe, you could drive with him or the service writer and show them the problem?
