Rear-upper shock mount

Update: problem fixed! See post 10 for details.

After months of trying to sell my Speed6, I just decided to keep it. But before I attempted to sell it, I put my stock suspension parts back on (except the endlinks). After which I heard a rear clunking noise over bumps and slightly in some turns. After going to the dealer to try and find the problem, they told me it was probably because of the AWR rear endlinks. While it seemed like reasonable claim, it turned out to be complete crap. I ended up buying and installing ac-delco endlinks but yet the clunk was still there.

Then I remember when I was putting the rear shocks back in, I had trouble with getting the bolts in. It seemed like the threads for the holes were screwed up because the bolts kept going in sideways. I applied extreme force and after 4 hrs, they were back on. Anyway, so before putting the wheels back on in the rear when changing the endlinks, I wanted to try something. I pushed down on the rotor when the spring perch was unattached and low and behold, there was the clunking noise.

Now that I finally diagnosed the problem, I have a question before I try and fix this. Is there a way to access the bolt holes for the rear-upper shock mount from inside the vehicle - like underneath the trunk carpeting/lining? The reason I ask is because I either need to retap the holes or drill them through and use a nut/bolt to keep this from happening again. I know that the bolts won't go any tighter because I have already tried, hence my need to retap the holes.

I just don't want to have to spend a whole day taking off the rear subframe and junk to find out there was an easier way to access it. I hope you know what part of the rear suspension I am talking about. Any help would be appreciated but I know I have diagnosed the problem to be loose upper shock mounts.

Thanks in advance for your help

man, i'm in the same boat you are. I've got a 6i that is having the same damn problem. My right rear is clunking around turns and I know its because of the bolt that i had to cross thread to get in. Its not the upper shock mount bolts, its the lower control arm bolt that connects to the rotor assembly. Im almost ready to buy a new lower control arm and just be done with it. I'll be following this thread.

Note: Remember to put locktite on the bolt that holds the shock to the upper shock mount.

Just an update for all who are keeping track of this thread. I took out the shocks yesterday. On the side that was making the majority of the noise, the nut had somehow gotten loose enough that when I took the last bolt for the upper shock mount off, the nut just popped right off, separate from the shock mount. I don't know how much longer I could have gone until the shock popped out of the mount, but it must not have been much knowing this. The other side turned out to be loose, but not nearly as bad as the driver's side.

So after I tapped the holes for the upper shock mount, I put locktite on the bolts that held the shock to the shock mount. This would ensure this would not happen again.

Also, there seems to be another slight noise now. Not nearly as loud as before I fixed the main noise, but still there. I think it is the swaybar or the endlinks. Although, the endlinks are brand new so I doubt its them. Another problem for a different time I suppose. I might as well do the rear differential mounts and rsb upgrade while I am at it.

I had the same problem before and i had to remove the rear shocks 3 times to figure out the problem ....finaly it was a simple trick which solved the problem..the angle between the shock and the upper mount should be between 110 and 120 degree...i went for 117 and its just fine..no more noise anymore ...be sure that the bold wont loss again..

Hopefully this trick will help ppl the same way it did to me.

Bringing this thread back :p

Wonder if the shock issue would apply to my case.

My rear left end makes a clunk noise when I hit a bump of any sort. Lowered with Tanabe\'s and never had a problem. The rear left break squeaks but I figure it\'s because they are still new. Had the dealer look at it, but of course they couldn\'t replicate the issue even when I drove the car with them and heard and and the guy said he didn\'t :swearin: But anyways, they took a look and everything\'s tight and nothing is rubbing according to them.

Edit:

Found my problem. Bottom of my spring snapped off >_<

Now my question is, do I try to get one spring for the rear left end, or should I get a rear set?
