Amazing: Mazda 6 and Impreza WRX drop off the list, while the Focus stays on and the Toyota Prius debuts???? They have got to be kidding me......

Here is the letter to the editor I sent:

Does C&D have a quota requirement for your 10 Best cars, i.e. x number of
compacts, y number of mid-size, etc.?? If not, there is NO WAY that you can
convince me that the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mazda 6s drop off of the list while
the Toyota Prius debuts and the Ford Focus stays on the list??? I used to use
your 10 Best list as a gauge for the best driving-pleasure oriented cars on the
market, but this 10 Best list is causing me to reaccess that evaluation,
especially with a car that C&D itself described as having "...all the passion
of a Maytag" in the October 2003 edition. An extremely disappointing 10 Best
list......

That's par for the course for MT, as they also picked the Chevy Citation one year!!!! However, I'm very disappointed with C&D, they used to look out for the driving enthusiasts.....

I haven't got this issue yet! If I remember, wasn't the G35 and Z picked last year?

The RX-8 should have easily ousted the Z, and the G35 should've been dropped totally.

The Prius deserves to be there, perhaps as much as any other car on the list.

Don't forget the SVT Focus is a good car, but I don't think it's better than a Mazda6 or WRX.

Checked my mailbox- it was in there. The RX-8 DID replace the Z. Ha. Damn right.

The TSX replaced the '6. What a bunch of poop!

10 Best:

Acura TSX
S4 Quattro
3-series/M3
Corvette
Focus
Accord
S2000
G35
RX-8
Prius

Actually, they reviewed the 5-series in this issue. They trashed it.

They also trashed the new Acura TL for being front-wheel drive. It had many problems stemming from this layout.

And, lastly, they said the Mazda3 churned out fantastic numbers, but they said the refinement took away from the fun of the Protege.

That's unbelievable... that they would put what they called a car "appliance" on their driving list and take off a true driver's car, the 6. The TSX is nice and all, but really, why pay a serious premium for a 4-banger, smaller version of the old Accord, ala European version? Geez, ya gotta hand it to Honda. Take their smaller Accord with the little 4 banger engine, put an Acura badge on it, and sell it for a premium in America!! And this wins over a 6s??!! Give me a break.... I lost a little respect for C&D today.

So since the TSX is on there, the Accord is technically on there twice, right? Cu mon, they couldn't give Mazda that much press over Honda, that might cost them serious ad dollars.....

Magazines have to change things to sell magazines. US News and World Report does the same thing with college and university rankings. On occasion, top institutions will fall precipitously within one year. Why? So they can sell magazines with "up-to-date" information. It's all journalistic sleight of hand, worthy of Houdini.

C&D can have their TSX, which looks so much like a Civic that I wouldn't want one if only for that reason.

Do you truly give a S**t what car magazines say. They have the biggest load of biased information I have ever seen. I don't want the 6 to be in their top 10 list. They can shove it up their prius. This way I won't have a bunch of idiots, who buy cars based on top 10 lists and not because of the actual substance, riding around town with the same car as me.

I've been a C&D subscriber for over 15 years, and have tried others over the years, but never renewed them like I did with C&D. To me, C&D gave a more unbiased review of cars, from an enthusiasts point of view. I use them when it is time to research cars, as I unfortunately don't have the time to research all the cars on the market myself, and I have found they are usually right on the money, including my present 6s and previous Protege5. With this latest list they are continuing a trend away from the enthusiasts point of view, one that started several years ago with the inclusion of the Focus and the PT Cruiser. As a consumer and car enthusiast, it's a shame that one the last good sources of car info is starting to lose it's credibility.

I have also been a long-time subscriber of C&D also and feel that it is the best car magazine. However I don't make my purchasing decisions out of magazines. A lot of their reviews have influence from car companies with $$$$$. This is true of all magazines! If you notice, most of the C&D comparos have BMW and Honda coming in first place. Why???? These companies make good cars, but sometimes the competition is a little bit better..

I've already bought my car. I am not going to be upset about the TSX taking my car's spot on the 10 best list because I know that it is an inferior car with a heftier price tag!(and a smaller engine)

Sorry to bash your favorite magazine, but I was just stating whats typical of ALL car magazines now a days.. It's all about the $$$$$.

Umm...my 6 has had 2 more recalls than the Focus. So right now its 2-0.
I like my 6 more than the wifes car, thats why we dont drive the same car, she dont like mine much either. different strokes ppl. I really dont get the Focus hate...its acutally a nice car and a hell of alot cheaper than the 6, and as of right now, with the 02-03-04 models have fewer problems then the 6. I'm happy with my choice, just because yours wasnt reaffirmed by the esteemed editors of C&D doesnt make them morons or liars, or your car slower or handle worse.

and the return of block911...this can only get worse from here :p

I don't see that in this case. Many cars have received repeat honors on C/D's ten best list. Cars like the Accord or 3-series have been on their tons of times. C/D has no problem with repeat winners.

I suspect that BlueMazda's point may have more validity than the idea that they just have to change things from time to time: QUOTE

C/D would never admit that (and have argued against it more than once) but I'm sure it enters their minds.

Very true, but they do seem to have overlooked the 6, which would allow one to argue they are inept. I fail to see how the TSX surpases the 6 when you factor in value, but that's just me.

I've driven both a Protege5 and a focus five-door, and the Protege blows it away. I can't possible imagine how an outdated Focus platform beat the new 3, but I guess the C/D editors must know their stuff.

I owned a 2001 Accord V6 and was not impressed. It's no better than the same year Camry and maybe even a bit worse. There is NO REASON whatsoever that the Camry should not be on that list equally as much as the Accord. Oh, other than that C&D is ultra pro-Honda biased. That's why. :sarc

Anyways, it's just a stupid mag. An extremely biased one at that. I dropped all of my subscriptions. I just page through to see specs and test results once in awhile in the store and then just wait for the online articles to come out and (maybe) I'll read them.

So who cares. :)
