I guess Mazda is just avoiding making a 666??? I think the only thing Mazda could do better for the 6s/i is throw in the short-shift, 6-speed tranny. We know they have them, two of their current, well one furture/one current, have them, so why skimp on it with the 6?

Yes, but both of those are RWD. In the Mazda RWD I have, I prefer the 5sp over the 6sp.

Hahaha, no silly :) 666 wasn't a typo for 626, I mean Mazda 6, V6, 6-speed :) (666 as in the devil, hence why they don't wanna do it...)

How is the 6spd geared? Is 6th actually an economy gear (5+1)? Or is it just like the 5spd with 1st and top gear the same, 2-5 more closely spaced.

It all depends on the gear ratios to my understanding. A close-gear 6 is basically a close-gear 5, like the M6 comes with, just with an extra overdrive for fuel ecnomy I guess.

Nope, most all cars that have a 6sp and a 5sp the top gear is about the same. in the 6Sp 1st gear is usually lower and the rear gears are different. Take a look at the Miata.

Transmission 6MT/5MT
Ratios :)1)
1st 3.760/3.136
2nd 2.269/1.888
3rd 1.645/1.330
4th 1.257/1.000
5th 1.000/0.814
6th 0.843
Final Drive 3.909/4.300

4th in the 5sp is 1:1 and 5th is 1:1 in the 6sp.

Both cars top speed in gear (at redline)

5sp 35 58 83 110 135
6sp 32 53 74 96 121 143

Don't let the top speed fool you, neither car can hit redline in top gear. Top speed is limited by HP and drag to the same speed.

I think the only thing that the 6 really needs is another 20 lb-ft of torque in the V6 models and I would have a really hard time *NOT* buying one :)

As far as gearing, you can't make a blanket statement about all 6spd gearing just based on one car. Nissan and Honda 6th gears are economy oriented. Audi 6th gear is still a shorter gear on the A4 3.0, but a longer economy gear on the A6 2.7T. 5th *AND* 6th gears are economy gears on the Corvette/Camaro and other LS1 engined cars. It all depends on what mileage targets the designers are trying to meet on an individual per-car basis.

All the car you mentioned may be the same body but with different engines with different power curves. Hard to compare. Yes, in most modern 5sp or 6sp you could call the the last gear "economy" gear or cruse gear.

I used the Miata because 5sp or 6sp, it is the same motor, same HP, same power curve. Put a turbo or SC on a Miata and 1st gear of the 6sp is almost useless.

If Mazda were to put a 6sp into a 6, I believe it would follow along the lines of the Miata. Unless they change the power curve of the engine, like to a turbo 4cyl.
