Why is the new Mazda6 so rare???

Seriously....I never see 2014/2015 models on the road. Once in a blue moon maybe, but nothing like the Camry or Accord. I can't figure out why Mazda hasn't taken a bigger bite out of the midsize sedan market.

I guess that's a good thing though, because I really don't want a "me too" car that you see at every intersection. Still though, it seems crazy to me that the Accord and Camry are so popular and the Mazda6 doesn't sell nearly as well.

You'll never see as many Mazdas as the "cookie cutter" Accord or Camry, and I won't ever complain about that.

Mazda is a MUCH smaller corporation than Honda or Toyota, so they'll never really be able to compete with the gross market. However, those people who do venture out of their little caves of bland sedans find relief in the 6 and the intoxicating feel of Zoom-Zoom.

Also - When I drove down to South Carolina for a vacation, I noticed very few 6's past the New York area. All the way down past New York I think I saw 1 total 6, but I see them on a daily basis around here (including new 3's). There's a LOT more around than when i first bought the car in 2013, but still not so many that people aren't sure what they're seeing, and I love the looks I still get :D
Yeah, I'm in NY (about 20 miles north of NYC) and I've been trying to spot the newer generation on the roads around here, but I hardly ever see one.

I'm just surprised that so many people choose the Accord and Camry over the Mazda6. I do think the new Accords (both sedan and coupe) are decent looking cars now, but before the current body style, they were just as bland and boring looking as the Camry.

The sad thing is that people don't even know what the 6 is, or where to get one, otherwise there'd be a lot more out there.

Also, most of the people on the road just don't care. They don't care what they drive, they don't care what looks nice or handles or whatnot, they're just soulless robots going from A to B.

Indeed! Yesterday, a man nearly broke his neck he turned so far back to watch my car as he slowly passed--he couldn't keep his eyes off it! I guess I now know how women must feel as they walk past a construction site...
I've owned my fair share of vehicles over the years. From trucks, to SUVs, to cars, 2-door, 4-door, high performance, etc.
I've only owned my Mazda6 for a month and it has gotten more attention, BY FAR, than any other vehicle I've owned.

The most exclusive car I owned was a black 2003 Mercury Marauder. The vehicle was only produced from 2003-2004 with a total production run of only 11,052 units and it still didn't come close to getting the attention the Mazda6 does. (I used it both on and off duty. I could light up the sky with red/blue lights and it still didn't make anyone look twice!)

First thing someone says to me is, "Love that color!" (Mine is Blue Reflex Mica)
The second thing is, "What is it?"

Blue Reflex was the other color I was considering. A very beautiful subtle grey-blue. But I've always played it safe with car colors in the past (white, champagne, blue, etc) that I wanted to own a color that stood out more in the crowd. Reflex is gorgeous, but Soul Red, well, won my soul (and I am NOT a red-car guy, but Mazda pulled it off). But, I figured I couldn't go wrong with either choice...

I don't know about you guys but I've been seeing A TON of new 6's and 3's in my area.
Around here I see VWs everywhere. I'm amazed how many people have been sucked in by their new ultra-bland styling. Must be advertising, since my past experience with the Passat is that general maintenance costs a small fortune.

Agreed! The only reason I went with the Blue Reflex Mica is because I've had a couple of red cars and didn't want one this time around. That Soul Red does look good in person. Pics don't do it justice.

I think most people buy VW because of the way they drive more than the way they look.
Was in myrtle beach for a full 7 days and only saw 1. I love it's so "rare"....here in Cary area near Raleigh if u drive a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Acura, you just blend in with the rest of the herd....
I was visiting the Naples/Ft Myers area in Florida last week and saw a good number of CX-5s, but not even one 6.

In response to the original query, if I'm reading the numbers correctly, Toyota sells more Camrys than all Mazdas combined, and the same goes for Accords. Mazda has only about 2 percent of the car market. More info here,

Here in the Omaha area I see at least 10-15 new 6s a day, and around 5-7 3s. There are a couple of very good Mazda dealers in the area, and boy do they do their part in breaking up the Camry and Accord parade! We bought our '04 6s brand new, and I usually see about 30 of the gen 1 6s a day. It's like living in Mazda country. :D
Shhhhhh don't wish the secret of the 6 get out. This is the best car and a HUGE value for what you get even in the priciest model.

2015 Mazda 6 GT w/ tech in snowflake white pearl mica :)
from a purely production standpoint.. ~3,600 cars per month. 12 months/yr 2 years of production <100,000 cars available not counting those sitting on dealer lots or in shipping yards. Unless the capacity to produce them has increased since 2013.. that's why they're rare-ish. Most cars have that many produced and sold each YEAR.whoops.. in THIS class of car :)
I hate to say it and no offense to my friends with 3rd gens, but I would not buy an new 6. Sadly Mazda has done what every car maker does when it has a great car - strives to broaden sales but ends up watering down or ruining the very attributes that drew people to the car in the first place.

Let's compare the first year 2003 model to the model ten years later:

2003 I4, Mtx
Length - 186.8
Width - 70.1
Wheelbase - 105.3
Track - 60.6
Wt - 3042
Double wishbone front suspension
Available V6

2013 I4, Mtx
Length - 193.7
Width - 72.4
Wheelbase - 109.8
Track - 62.4
Wt - 3268
Strut front suspension
No available V6

In order to compete with Camry and Accord, the 6 has grown in every dimension and has dropped the features that appealed most to the enthusiast.

I think the car has great styling and is far more attractive (visually) than the competition, but IMHO the car no longer distinguishes itself as a driver's car. I truly wish they had stuck to their roots rather than trying to appeal to the masses.

Out of personal curiosity, have you drive one? It's a mundane sedan as any other if you drive it as such and seek high MPG #'s. If you DRIVE this car, it is a DRIVER'S car. It handles somewhere between my wife's miata and my formula (which are ferociously close with my mods BTW). It responds to inputs well, holds gears in turns as it should, and as long as you keep the revs up above the doldrums it's a very VERY responsive platform. This from the guy who is FIRST in line to bash it as a daily enthusiasts car... because you have to TRY to extract the soul out of it. This is why the mag editors LOVE this car. They ARE pushing it and seeing what it can do, and abusing it. Just hum-drumming along. meh. Thinking of getting into a GT with tech for this very reason. Paddle shifter to get better control (manual mode sucks IMO vs these) as well as I-Eloop for a small performance boost to negate the weight gain of the GT as well as better city driving dynamics and FE. I was beyond done with this car until a solo-sprint this past weekend and then checking out a loaded out GT. :D

I am in Connecticut, I have seen two black ones. I see a bunch of the Mazda SUV but that is probably because most people fear the snow around here.
