Which one are you gonna buy?

Guess this is my first post. A little history...currently own a 92 Miata with 196k smiles, which has been thoroughly autocrossed and thrown around on the occasional track day. The wife has been turned on by the RX8 will will replace here 92 Corolla some day in the future. Since she's been driving the practical car for the last few years...I figured I get the next "family" car and just hold on to the Miata which would be converted to a track slut. Once I saw pics of the new 6 I new it would make a worthy garage mate. A few months ago I was ga-ga over the new Mini Cooper...but started to think that if kids were in the game plan something a little larger might be more suitable eh. For me the charcoal grey or blue 6 Sport-hatch, with black backgroud headlights, the 4-banger (to frugal to spluge in a v-6); and auto-manual tranny if offered (this way the lady won't mind if it sneak away with the RX8 on the occasional commute since he hate stick shift :(. I'll probably opt for the Nav and sunroof...always wanted a car with both. The 6 sure has a lot of appeal amongst the the latest offerings. The Ultima seems like its main competition. People who are used to buying Hondas and Toyotas will stay stuck in a rut and continue their trend...but people shopping for Nissan, Mitsu's, even domestics will be more likely to accept the new 6. It will be interesting to see what sort of after market follow the 6 gains...hopefully a supercharger will be developed upping a 4-banger to a proper 200hp. I still can't get over the fact that I am willing to buy a FWD again.

Anywayz...I look forward to following this list...and reading the first ownership reviews and drive reports. It'll be a year or two before we can get one in our garage....so the Hatch should be in the US by then :)

Welcome aboard. I've always loved the Miata-great little roadster! Wow, that's looking like quite a garage in future: 6, RX-8, and the MX-5. Nice!
I don't think Mazda is planning on offering Nav here in the US. The aftermarket is up in the air, but I'm not worried given that Mazda is brining the MazdaSpeed name over. You may see aftermarket turbo kits for the 6 available at your dealer. Think of the possibilities if they choose to warranty the stuff from MazdaSpeed! It's probably a pipe dream, but hey, it's MY pipe dream dammit. :sarc

If Mazda offers AWD on the regular hatchbacks, then I'll probably buy the V-6 hatchback. If they don't but send the MazdaSpeed 6 over as a hatchback, then I'll buy that. If they don't do either, then I probably won't be buying one at all.

As I needed a new car promptly, I took the first one avaialble. Nothing very crazy - a silver contrail 1,8l sedan with manual tranny and FWD (yes only 120 hp). When I went to dealership last week to have them install a CD player I saw a yellow GT hatch in front of the house. Naturally, my first reaction was to ask for the keys of this beast for the time they had my car in service - and they said it's ok. But then I started thinking... If I would take this GT to a test drive I would probably never want to sit in my sedan again. So I let the opportunity pass for now but I'm not sure I could resist trying out the AWD version though. It's coming out in mid-december this year and would make a perfect Christmas present:)

Sigvard, AWD version of what? The only model I've heard any confirmation on having AWD is the wagon. Have you heard for sure that the hatchback will be offered with AWD? If so that's great news.

Sorry for the confusion ;) The AWD is still wagon only.

No worries; you were about to get me excited though! :p

I'm gonna wait for the MazdaSpeed AWD 2.3T 5-door 6 Spd. If they don't bring it to US shores, or if it is too gawdy, I'll buy the 3.0L AWD 6 spd 5 Dr. My base requirements, AWD, 6 Spd, & 5-Dr, otherwise, I stick to my Protege.

I must be getting old but I really really like the look of the wagon - I would never have considered a wagon before but the 6 wagon looks way cool!

However, I don't think my '88 626 will last until next year when the wagon comes out so I'll probably just get the sedan.

Mazda - if you are reading this, please ANNOUNCE soon when the dang models will come out so we know how long to wait!!! And surprise us with all three body styles!

I'm fine with the standard 2.3l 4 with 5-speed manual. No auto transmission...thank goodness there is a manufacturer who still puts a manual into their bread-and-butter sedan!

Well,

I've been following the 6 on the Internet since the first news came out. Must admit, I have been drewling...

Anyway, my wife and I sort of decided not to buy a new car right now. We have been rebuilding the garage, gotten married and we expect our first kid this fall.

This was the reason we went to our car dealer - to find out how to unplug the front passenger airbags to put the child seat in. We live in a small town and the car dealer recognized us when he saw our car outside. So he came out with the keys to the new Mazda6 that had arrived only the day before (this was early july). "A testdrive, perhaps?" he asked with a big grin on his face, knowing what a trap he was luring us into. And we took the beit...

An hour later, we had signed the papers for a Silver Contrail hatch, due to be delivered in october. We opted for the 2.0, without NAV or XENON headlights. Alloy 16", ACC, etc. is standard here.

So now we're waiting, and waiting. There's nothing as frustrating as waiting for a new car... <sigh>

You got so suckered, I love it! I can practically hear the Jaws theme as the dealer eyes you and gets that evil grin, then walks over and hands the keys to you. :hoho
I bet the Mazda dealers are all having multiple orgasms about how easy this car will be to sell!

Don't know about the orgasms, but one thing is sure: this car isn't sold - it's bought. No effort whatsoever from the salesmen... LOL

I second you on that. I tried to haggle over some extra equipment or discount when they couldn't install a CD player by the time I got the car and the response was simple - either you take it as is or the next fellow in line will. So I drove around for three weeks without a CD :(

Yeah, but at such times you may remind them that they're not the only Mazda dealer on the planet... ;-)

Well, at that moment they were the only dealer. There are two Mazda dealers in Estonia and I got offers from both, but the other dealer could not get me a car before mid-August (would have been 2,0 though). It was the third week of June then. When I got the car on 4th of July, the line-up was already in November... 'Nuff said!

I would probably have done the same...

Montegro Blue, S version, but not for two years until my current lease runs out. If there is a Mazdaspeed version by then, I'll buy that. I just started the second of three years lease on a '01 Nissan Sentra GXE.

I have a Miata now that I love, but our baby's arriving in about six weeks, so alas the two-seater's probably going to be sold.

Mazda6 is front-runner, with the RX-8 trailing not too far behind it. :) But I want the hatchback, not the sedan, so it sounds like I have another year to wait?

I can't figure out WHY Mazda thinks the US market doesn't want a hatch. Hatches are all the rage in the small-car market, and nobody is marketing a mid-size sporty hatch. Our other car is a Saab 9-3, which is great, but even the 9-3 has lost the 5th door with the 2003 model.

C'mon, Mazda, get that hatch out over here quick or I'll end up with a used 9-3 convertible instead. Don't lose a recent Mazda convert! :D

So, I'd like a titanium gray V6 hatchback. SOON!

I'm not going to buy a 6 myself (I'm pushing my dad ;) ); but if I would, I would buy a hatch with V6 or a 2.3 turbo. But I wouldn't buy the hatch for his bigger interiorvolume..
Looks like I've got a little secret to unveil; the hatch doesn't have bigger storageroom than the sedan, nope! How strange this may sound; the sedan has more space than the hatch, and you've got a bit more headroom at the backseats in the sedan than in the hatch..
I know this myself since my dad and I had a 'testdrive' with the 6sedan 2.3 Active (this is how they call the strongest 6 in the Netherlands). The car looks great with his 17" alloys and Xenonheadlights, clear backlights :D
Although I don't even have a driverslicense myself :( :( :( , my dad allowed me to drive a bit around on an industrial zone, which was kinda cool!! I found out the 6 drives much better than our 98' 626, much sportier, and the brakes are also better. And the engine; the engine is already making a loud, sporty noise, without a sportmuffler!
Guess I was a bit talking to no-one, cause the subject of this topic was which 6 I would buy. Well, as I mentioned before that would be the hatch, because I think this is the most 'pure' form of the Mazda6. All the other types are all distracted from the hatch.
And just look at the pictures at mazda's official site (link below); you'll see that the hatch looks more sportier than the sedan. The SW also looks kinda cool, but I like the 6 hatch the most.

I'm also pushing my mom. Offcourse I hope for the 2.3 Active, but that isn't goiing to happen. If she would buy one, she buy the Mazda6 Sport 1.8 Touring. With the 17" alloys and a rearspoiler. The color will be silver. Just like the one on the following pic
