What's your Mazda 6 story ?

I think it was the winter of 2011 when I had to visit Las Vegas for a conference. The rental car agency had a choice of Elantra and Mazda 3 for me. I had never driven a Mazda in my life, so I chose the Mazda. The interiors were typical hard plastic econobox, and everything I touched and felt seemed rough and hard. Then as I pulled out of the rental car parking and on to the streets of vegas, I immediately noticed how quick the steering rack was. It was almost sports car like, every minute steering input evoked an instant reaction from the car. I just loved it !

A couple of days later we made a trip to the mojave desert. I don’t exactly recall what roads we took, but it was windy, twisty with plenty of elevation changes and miles of no traffic ! I distinctly remember driving through the desert roads at pretty ridiculous speeds and i thought more than once i was going to lose control of the car, but no matter what speed i carried into a corner, the car came out of it with minimal drama ! How hard was i on the car ? With 80% highway driving I was averaging teens to low 20s gas mileage >:)

Usually I am relieved when i turn over the keys of a rental car, but this time i was actually quite sad that my holiday romance with Mazda was coming to an end. I have since driven a 2011-2012 Mazda 3s on 4 different occasions only to confirm that it was indeed a good handling car with ample feedback and not just my imagination.

Fast forward 5 years when it was time to change cars, i just knew it had to be a Mazda. I am not a fan boy, so i did drive the competitors cars, and each one of them had their strong points and none of them were bad. But the Mazda 6 was that 1% car in the segment. Meaning 99% of the time there is little difference between the 6 and competition, but it is when you go for that last 1% that the Mazda 6 shines. It drives stiff, the steering is heavy and has feel (*more of it later), the body has better control and the interiors are more sophisticated ( not calling it superior because i think both the Accord and Fusion in highest trims have equally good quality materials and finish).

So in Jan 2016 I turned my holiday fling into a marriage when I bought a 2016 M6 GT. And as I get to know the car better, there are things that i love and there are things about the car i wish were different. But it still stands out of the crowd, and it still puts a smile on my face each time i take an exit at a higher speed than what the limit suggests. I love the interiors, some of my friends with Audis and Lexus have complimented how good the car looks and feels inside.

That said when i look compare my experience with 2012 Mazda 3, I feel the gen 3.5 Mazda 6 lacks some "feel" . The steering though heavy, isn’t as quick nor precise as the old Mazda 3. But it’s the overall feedback from the car which i think is lacking compared to the 3 which is a tad disappointing. I recently had a chance to drive on some rural twisties of Pennsylvania, and even at pretty sane speeds of <50 mph, the car has plenty of understeer. Then there are the brakes, all it takes is few miles of hard driving for the brakes to fade. I just couldn’t push the car without feeling uncomfortable. The front feels like it is trying to wash away under braking. Then ofcourse there is the known lack of power below 3000 rpm and a pretty thin torque band, so you constantly need to keep the revs up if you have to carry some speed.

Maybe I am expecting too much from what Is an economy car, but I constantly compare my experience with the last generation Mazda3 and somehow set my expectation much higher. I don’t regret my decision one bit, I still think it is the best car in its segment. I have plans for strut braces and better tires soon ( the 19in dunlops are rubbish for more reasons than one! ), and hopefully better brakes in future. Overall, it is still a fantastic car, but it has thought me a very important lesson, if you need a performance car that can be a daily driver, then get a Golf R/GTI/FocusST or RS, but if you need a daily driver that is economical to buy and own but has a little oomph, then keep your expectations in check and buy a Mazda. Zoom Zoom !

No new car for me, but I am 48yrs old and my old butt was getting tired of the 1988 Mustang LX 5.0's loudness and harshness. Decided to post an ad on Kijiji to trade. That's where my 2004 Mazda 6s hatch came from. Young guy in his 20's wanted a Mustang. Was a good deal for both of us.

At first I was worried I'd not have any fun anymore. The Mustang was a very fun car to drive. It had no options, no A/C and most of the interior was gutted out of it. What it DID have was a fresh 302, a hot cam, good heads/intake and longtube headers. Hot days were brutal though and I kept thinking I am getting too old for this ****.

The Mazda 6 first gen handles unreal for a 4 door car. I do have 18" RX-8 wheels and decent tires along with a loweres suspension with Eibach/Konis. I've taken some corners at what I consider ridiculous speeds and I have yet to even hear even the slightest squeal or feel and lean. Car does ride firm over rough streets, but it's bearable.

Car is very fun to drive, don't miss my Mustang hardly at all now and my family is much happier climbing into a roomy car compared to a tiny and uncivilized Mustang. Would not change a thing.

I've been a Mazda man since 1981 (consider that for a moment...). First was a 626 coupe 5 speed in stardust blue. I never want to hear anyone complain about lack of grunt in the new Mazdas. 1981 was a dark time, but I loved that car. Much nicer than the Toyota /Honda competition of the time and better suited to my personality. A 1986 Acura Integra followed (honestly the most fun I've had in a car) and then a 1997 626 V6 5 speed, again because it suited me far better than the competition which was pretty narrow considering the v6/5 speed options at the time. Then came my 2005 Mazda 6s 5 speed hatch. After a minor track day at Elkhart Lake, I started poking around for some brake upgrade options online and found this community. My wife would have preferred I not...

Ran the 6 for 173,000 miles modded far more than I ever intended. But what a ride. I still miss her, I did love her so. Lowered on Mazdaspeed Hatch Springs and Bilsteins, fitted with msds headers and a magnaflow cat back, carled tails, Morimoto Retrofit headlights, a beautiful set of Kazera KZ-D 18" wheels that met their demise at Deal's Gap, all kinds of small mods and parts too numerous to list. And that lapis blue. Sigh...

Anyway, she still lives with a other owner as I have moved on to yet another Mazda, this time a deep Crystal Blue Mica 3s GT hatch 6 speed. Love this one, too.

Guess I'm a lifer.

Sent from the wrong side of the tracks.

My first love was a white '93 MX-6 coupe four-banger, bought used by my mom in '96 or '97 and handed down to me eventually. On paper, her specs weren't that impressive, but stuff had been done to her by a previous owner before my mom that improved performance(no idea what exactly though), and she had an AT non-stock sports tranny. That car fit me like a glove, was lots of fun, and hugged the road beautifully - I could corner at insane speeds without any issue. According to what I've found online the '93 four-banger topped out at like 117 mph(if memory serves), but she could certainly exceed that without breaking a sweat. I still wish Mazda would bring back the MX6 or make a 6 coupe.

Before I got my CPO '14 Touring 6, I was considering the 3s GT cause they are more fun to throw around, but got a good deal on the 6 and needed the room for the kids(dealing with harnessed booster seats still) and hubby(hubby's knees hit the dash on the passenger side in the 3, 2nd and 3rd gens). I am enjoying my 6 though, she's a step up from the 3 in some ways even in the Touring trim, and she is purty in the Meteor Gray(every where I go I get compliments). I want a tune and to add a few things to my 6 eventually, just need to wait until the budget is more accommodating.

Years and years ago I had bought a 1987 Monte Carlo SS. It had some modifications to it, got me in to a lot of trouble for the 3-4 years I had it.
I got to a point where I said I want something faster and nicer.

Enter the summer of 2007.

I bought a 1997 Mustang Cobra. Modded that up, had a lot of fun with it. The Monte SS was my daily and the Cobra was my summer from time to time play toy.
About 2 years later I said I needed a more economical daily driver...so the Monte had to go.
I bought a 1995 Cavalier beater car.
So for a few weeks I actually had 3 cars. I sold the Monte SS, paid the Cavalier off with it and banked the rest of the money.

Drove that until summer of 2011 where I said to myself, I love my cars but having 2 is too much work and time...and money.

Enter Mazda 6.

I started looking for a newer, more reliable car to replace both the Mustang and Cavalier. I was talking to a friend one night and he said one of our friend was selling his car. At the time I was looking at an automatic and our friends car was a standard. I was like ehhh, I dunno, I'm kind of tired of shifting cars.
He talked me in to going to see him for a possible trade of my Mustang to the Mazda.
I met up with him, we traded cars to test drive. We were going to do the deal a few days later when he backed out last minute. He traded it to a dealership about an hour away and told me where it was.
I literally called them the next day.(Friday) They said they'd call me back Monday because they didn't even check the car out yet and enter it in to their inventory. I didn't really expect them to call me back, much less so quickly...but they did. They called me Monday and said, do you want to come in tomorrow?
I went in the next day, Tuesday when they opened.
I drove the Mustang there, talked to them about trading and paying the difference yada yada yada.
They needed to legally check it out, inspect it, needed new tires and a few other things before they could sell it. I was there from when they opened the doors until when they closed that night.
They even bought me lunch for making me wait so long.

Anyway to finish the story, I traded my Mustang that day, paid the difference in a check and drove off in the 2005 Mazda 6S. At the time it had about 70,000 miles on it. A few weeks later I sold my Cavalier. The day I drove off the lot with the Mazda was the day it was paid off.
I won't get in to it, but I know what the dealership paid for it and I know how much they screwed me over by. Whatever, I wanted the car.

Btw, my friend traded it for a 2004 Volvo S60R.

Never been a Mazda fan. I liked the first generation Mazda 6. I liked the exterior. Anyway, one day in 2014 while driving in my beater chevy cavalier, I saw a red car parked in one of the buildings. I thought, damn, that car is beautiful, but I had no idea what it was.. I got close to it and it said mazda 6. It was a grand touring I think.

I looked it up online and loved all the videos, pictures, etc, but the price was way too high for me. Here I am, 2 years later, I finally have one. I mainly wanted it for the looks and interior. I couldn't care less about the lack of power. It definitely is more powerful than my chevy cavalier.

Definitely has more power than a Cavalier huh? LOL. It literally has DOUBLE the power.
What year did you get? I like the first gen the best myself. Mine is orange. It's the Sedan.

It doesn't feel like it has double the power. I had a 2004 Chevy Cavalier with 140hp. The Mazda 6 has 184hp. That's not double. It is only 44h more. That is nothing. I barely even feel it.

Yes, the first generation Mazda 6 was very nice looking. I would always see it around 2006-2008 years.

I have the 2014 touring with tech. The cavalier was my first and only car. It was all I knew. Let me tell you. It sucked monkey balls. Probably one of the worst interiors ever. All flimsy plastic that cracked and broke to a point where my air vents fell off. To make matters worse. I had the base version, with everything manual, except the transmission. It had 14 inch tires with steelies. The interior was so bad, that I gave up on cleaning it.

The clearcoat had peeled so badly that I would always park far away from people, because I was so ashamed to be seen in it. I would always wear a cap and sun glasses, and thought to myself, one all this will be over. I just gotta be patient.

One thing is sure, that car never gave me any problems, except for regular maintenance. When I gave it up as a tradein, I didn't wash or clean the interior lol because I knew they were going to give me pocket change anyway, which they did, only $500 lmao I didn't care, I just wanted to get rid of it

Learned to drive on a Mazda GLC wagon 5 speed, fast forward 30 years and you find me looking for a solid, good looking, non-mainstream sedan.

Nissan only has a CVT, VW CC interior didn't do it for the wife, already had Subaru's, won't consider the Korean options, luckily for me I fell for the Mazda6. This is the first Mazda I have purchased, won't be the last.

My Cavalier had 110/115hp...MY Mazda 6 has 220hp. That's double. 44hp isn't noticeable?

Comments like that lead me to believe you know very little.

The bold backs my statement.
Cavaliers were A to B cars. Nothing special.
Affordable, reliable, cheap and easy to fix. You got what you paid for.
The Cobalt replaced it. Same concept really but more power and the quality and reliability went down a bit.
Why do you think they stopped making both?
Chevy knew they made something right AND cheap. Ooooh why do that...it only makes sense....time to discontinue them...
And I could be wrong, but I don't know of any 2003-2008 Mazda 6 having 184hp. They have anywhere between 150ish to 220 depending on year. I got the '05 with the 220. :D

So, just because your mazda 6 versiom has 220hp, that makes it the norm? Obviously, I was talking about MY car, not YOURS. I have the 2014, which has 184hp, which is why I said, is not really that much more powerful than my cavalier and i rarely feel the difference

The day where all mazda 6s from it creation to the current 2017 model have 220hp from factory, thatll be the universe where you are right lol

Where did I say that the cavalier was a good car? Everything you say about the car, I already knew. I used be a member of one of those cavalier/sunfire forums. In fact, I hated the car and couldnt wait to get rid of it.

I dont know what cavalier you had, but mine was rated at 140hp, which on a dyno would be less, but them same would apply to a 3rd gen mazda 6 with 184hp, on a dyno would also be less.

You said it has double the power, as if all mazda 6s came with 220hp from factory lmao.

About 95% of what you said in both of your last posts are wrong. Educate yourself.
Anyway, I'm done with this conversation.

You are right, ALL Mazda 6s have 220hp from factory, including the current 2017 model. Yeah. Everyone buys the old Mazda 6s. Every person who owns a Mazda 6 has the 220hp model. YEP.

https://www.google.com/search?q=chevy+cavalier+2004+horsepower&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

2004 Cavalier = 140hp
2014 Mazda 6 = 184hp

Yeah, you are right DOUBLE the power. Yeah, just because you had a non-ecotec Cavalier from 2000-2002, it must mean all cavaliers had 110hp, right? It also must mean that all mazda 6s have 220hp, right?
Is this still going on?

First year college student in 2012 with a 30 minute commute every day, felt I needed something a little more reliable than my rusted out '99 Subaru Legacy that seemed like it needed something done on it every week. Searched around for a bit and on a whim went to one of the larger local dealerships. Saw my 2006 6s and instantly fell in love. The look, the features, the mileage, the price, everything was perfect. Went home and looked at it on their website and noticed that it was listed for $2000 cheaper than it was priced on the lot, so naturally I had to jump on it. The next day I went back and test drove 2 cars (mine and a 2008 6, but a base i model) and the feel and sound of the engine sealed the deal. Drove it home 2 days later and haven't looked back. 4 years later and it's still a pleasure to drive.

Plus I don't think I'll ever score a fully optioned car with only 30K miles for only ten grand again!

Awesome ! Always loved the looks of those first gen Mazda6s. I think they have aged really well. If there is one thing i wish my 2016 M6 had from the gen 1 is the hydraulic steering and a slightly quicker steering rack. I am always taken by surprise when i drive the mrs 2016 tc. The quick steering rack gets some getting used to, but a joy once you get a hang of it.
It's funny how mad he's getting, especially considering he's an idiot.
