Boy, there are a lot of answers to that question. Folks will swear theirs is the best no matter what too....

There is a big ol' oil testing thread around here somewhere. Lot's swear by the high dollar full syn with good reason.

For myself, I change every 3,000 or so, and am not willing to part with that kind of coin. I run a much less expensive Castrol GTX 5-30

I do run Amsoil everywhere else in the car tho.

I use stock MotorCraft 5W30 Syn-blend. 87,000 miles and no problems yet. The Shell Rotella 5W40 is what a lot of people love in the Speed 6 engines because it's very similar to Diesel engines. I use Amsoil in other areas tho....PTO, rear diff, trans

I've been using Penzoil Platinum and been pretty happy. Haven't done a UOA with it, but I have seen it hold up will in those done by others. Also, it goes on sale from time to time at WalMart or Canadian Tire, so I picked up a few cases last time.

the synthetic on sale. it's never failed me.

I've used Amsoil, Royal Purple, M1, Castrol Syntec....out of all those, the one on sale was best. changed at 5-6k

Our engines operating system is pretty close to a Diesel engine. The DI system, temperature and wear.

I use ENEOS 5w40...

not to be a dick, but other than the DI, our engine is nothing like a diesel.
Even the turbo behaves differently, the wear and tear is caused by different things, ...this could be a long list. Don't buy anything for our engines because 'they're like a diesel', because they arent

still can't figure out why this motor takes so much oil... majority of it is only in the bottom block, and it doesnt even use it to lubricate the cylinder walls

yep.

In my turbocharged car (mostly stock 220hp/245ft-lb Clown Hearse) I usually use Pennzoil Platinum because it's less expensive than Mobil1, Castrol Syntec, or Castrol Edge. But I've used Syntec and Mobil1 when they have been on sale. Didn't really notice a difference.

Penn/Plat does leave a slight yellow film on everything under the valve cover. I don't think it has anything to do with the oils ability to lubricate or protect. Just funny that my N/A Mazda runs on conventional oil and doesn't have that film and my turbo car which has about 20,000 less miles does have it.

When Autozone discontinued the Quaker State Q-Horsepower full synthetic, they discounted it to $1.99 a quart. I bought every quart of 5W30 they had. I'm going to run the Q/S syn for awhile I have enough for 5 oil changes + enough 10W30 for about four oil changes on my generator.

i use motorcraft. can't seem to really find anything else i'd put in her.

i think the dealerships were putting in pennzoil platinum for a while. seemed to do OK with that too. Putting that in the g/fs car though, her little 91 accord loves that.

are you implying that somehow that makes it right? please discuss. I'd like to hear your reasons on how our engine is like a diesel.

sorry for thread jacking OP, but seems we're going to have to get into this discussion to clear some stuff up related to your question.

btw, I'm a diesel engine engineer by profession.

I thought it had to do more with the ZDDP content and low ash nature of diesel engine oils.

The DISI Mazdaspeed engines have a throttle body. Diesels do not.

The DISI Mazdaspeed engines have spark ignition. Diesels do not.

One could argue that since diesels convert fuel to mechanical energy to push a piston down, then my MZI is closely related to a diesel. That person would be just as wrong as relating the DISI to a diesel. (and the phosphates in the ZDDP package would probably murder a 6S's pre-cats anyway)

its similar to a diesel in the fact we have such high pressure fuel injectors and experience oil sheer due to fuel in the oil and thats the only way. look at any oil analysis and you'll see that certain oils don't hold up to the fuel that gets into the oil and it sheers quicker. i've done several analysis's on the shell rotella 5w40 and it holds up very well to fuel sheer and it holds up great. until someone proves me wrong its the only oil i'll use in this car.

Feejay and Spaz-here is a quote concerning this so called discussion "Speed 6 engines because it's very SIMILAR to Diesel", now I was agreeing with him saying it's SIMILAR but not the SAME as a diesel engine. True we have a spark plug and throttle body. My family owns a diesel calibration repair shop, I have worked on many cars for 10yrs... What are you trying to get to?....

Okay, fuel pressures are similar.
If you jump into the way back machine you'll find injector pump pressures on old indirect injection diesels similar to the MZI's fuel pressure

I'm still sticking to the ZDDP package/low ash in diesel oils that makes it useful in the DISI

It doesn't use it to lubricate the cylinder walls? Are you running pre-mix on a 4-stroke like a Shindaiwa engine?
