So I went golfing yesterday and when I got done, the trunk wouldn't open when I went to put my clubs away. I can feel the unlock mechanism working but the handle never engages (it feels like its always in the locked state). It's like the lock disengages then re-engages itself or something. I was thinking that maybe I closed the trunk on a plastic bag or a shoelace and it's blocking the mechanism? I've never had any problems with it before. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. without touching the handle, lock the car, unlock, then try and open
2. make sure the key hole is in "unlock" position and not somehow locked. so stick your key in there to double check
3. make sure the russian hooker in the trunk isn't holding it closed on you

Use the actual key in the trunk key hole and lock it, and then unlock it. I've had that happen once in a while, and it usually always fixes the problem. That or the battery in your key fob may be on it's way out. Try to unlock it manually first if you haven't already.

If that doesn't work (I'm pretty sure it will), you could pull the neg terminal on your battery, and then try to unlock it manually with the key. That way you'll know if it's the locking mech in the trunk causing the problems, or the latch itself.

Yeah, i just had this happen to me two days ago exactly, using the key was the only thing that worked for me. I didn't resort to unhooking the battery so I can't state if that would work or not.

Yeah, I don't think he would have to disconnect the neg. I was just trying to take the electrical lock mech out of the picture in case that was the problem. I have this happen to me from time to time, but it's no biggie.

Yeah, once you figure out that the key solves the issue, it makes you more at ease. I did freak out a little when I realized there was no easy way for me to get into the trunk other than from the actual trunk.

I think I might try the battery next time if it happens again. I would be curious to see if that would fix it also.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the key thing when it first happened and the key didn't work. I then put the key in the ignition and it wouldn't work there either. I just bought the car a month ago from a Mazda dealership (Bountiful Mazda of Bountiful, UT). I live in Montana so it's not really an option for me to go back to the dealership and talk to them. I don't really understand how its possible that the dealership gave me a key fob that works and the key doesn't.

That stinks. Did you check your fuses? There are some in the car, driver's side on the left that are mostly for interior stuff, and the rest are under the hood. I don't know where the trunk latch one is, but you may as well take a peek if you haven't already.

im' having the same problem with my 04...except there's no key hole for the trunk! help!
This is for a Speed6 not the regular 6. You may want to post in the other section to get better advice.

We don't have a trunk release in the cabin, we only have a handle on the trunk and a key hole.
