one of my buddies just bought a 05 mazda 6, I also have a 2005, 6 but my buddy has a 5 speed tranny and I only have a 4 speed most of the other 6,s I've seen have a 5 speed why do I have a 4 speed and not a 5 speed the tranny's automatic

Could he have the V6 while you have the 4 cyl? The first-gen got quite a few different transmissions during it's progression.

no that's what I thought at first but we both got the 2.3L 4cyl DOHC VVT that's why I was confused

Guessing your buddie's is a late model '05 since the transmission was upped to 5 sp on '06 I4 units.
