It appears that the timing on my brother-in-laws Mazda 6 2.3 has jumped. Does anyone know if this is an interference motor? If so, what heads are compatible?
That is great to know. I have been searching the boards and internet trying to find out if the 2.3 is an interference motor. So I either dropped valves in every cylinder, lost the heads gasket or jumped time. I have cylinder compressions of 32, 70, 78 and 38 from timing chain to battery. I think I had a timing chain tensioner fail or something.
UPDATE:
The timing chain tensioner did not fail but it might have exceeded the mechanical limits of the piston. I did find out that my brother-in-law said that the oil light was on indicating low oil pressure. I don't know if this was caused by the oil actually being low or that the oil pump is failing. There did not seem to be much slack in the chain or excessive wear on the chain guides. I ordered new chain guides, timing chain and tensioner but I'm wondering if I should replace the oil pump while I'm in there. I am not interested in rebuilding the entire motor just because I already have half of it apart. Thank you!
