Subaru has had major successes in the United States recently. With that kind of upscaling, there are bound to be growing paints. In a rare turn of events, Subaru has issued not one but two recalls recently to add to their mounting QC issues.

Brake Light Recall - Over 2.3 million vehicles are being recalled for faulty brake light switch that can affect the ignition system. Recalls affect Impreza and Forester models from 2008 - 2017 and is slated to be Subaru's biggest recall ever.

Back Up Camera Recall - On a much smaller scale, 71,000 vehicles are being recalled for a software glitch that can cause the backup camera to not work, resulting in a blank screen. The recall affects 2018 Outback and Legacy models built between 5/18 and 723 of 2018, as well as 2018 BRZ models built between 8/29/17 and 8/30/18

Subaru is a great case study for aspiring brands trying to establish themselves in a highly competitive market like North America. Subarus have long had a fanatical following in Colorado, Tri-state and New England regions. The relatively low volume also helps them keep the demand high, with small discounts and even smaller holdbacks for the dealers. Unlike Mazda, Hyundai and Kia, i dont think Subaru has any intentions of trying to go upscale, heck, i'd be happy if they just start spraying underneath the hood !

What's interesting is 2018 was their first down year since 2014. Not coincidentally, 2018 was also the first year that the completely eliminated a manual transmission option for every single model.

If we're talking the USA then not even close. 2018 was Subaru's best year ever selling cars here in the US. Their market share for 2018 was also the most it's ever been.
