Well I took my MS6 to the track yesterday. I really haven't learned how to drive yet, but I thought I did well matching MotorTrend's 14.1... then I get on here and so many of you have run high 13s!!
I'm trying to figure out where I could improve.

My times were as follows (I'll leave off my embarassing reaction times since they don't affect trap times):

60'______330________1/8___MPH________1000_______1/4____MPH
[email protected][email protected]
[email protected][email protected]
[email protected] (missed 3rd)12.116__ [email protected]
[email protected][email protected]
[email protected][email protected]
[email protected]_______ [email protected]

I tried different techniques, and my best run (#4) was made dumping the clutch at about 4500 off the line (I heard a loud pop in the middle of the car), then shifting into 2nd at 6000, and shifting into the upper gears at 5500, riding out 4th to about 6200 at the finish.

My best mph came from slipping the clutch off the launch, but the e.t. suffered on that one (#5).
What launch techniques/shift points are you guys in the 13s using?

Yep, it seems so. I wonder why my speeds are low? Maybe I'm shifting too slow?

Do you think you're shifting too slow? What was the altitude and temprature when you were running? All your runs were a bit inconsistant did you use different techniques each run? I did do a writup you'll find at the bottom of my sig for what I did.

Yep, I tried all the different launch techniques I know about, and tried powershifting once. My best run came more or less using your tips. I dumped the clutch at about 4500, and didn't power shift.

The weather averaged about 71 degrees. 1,002 feet elevation.

The track felt good (Atlanta Dragway), although other folks seemed to have a tough time running what they thought they should run as well. One guy with a modded Cobalt SS trapped at 97-99mph, but couldn't seem to get better than a 14.5.

The only reason I suggest I may be shifting slow is I think I had decent weather, and can't figure anything else out. I do seem to be an inconsistent driver, even when not experimenting with different techniques. I can run a 13.5 in the mustang, let it cool down, then make another pass using the same techniques and end up in the 14s.

You did not happen to have a bunch of stuff in your car when you ran did you? Jack, tools...? It is hard to say, your 60ft times are nice, but you can see a time difference as soon as the 330 mark. Could all be in your shifting, but that would mean you are REAL SLOW on the gear change.
I thought, from some of the other threads, that shifting from 1-2 at about 6200 has netted some of the best times.

Thanks,
Jason

I was there also yesterday. I had problems with mph too. And it was also my first time ever at a track. I had my jack, spare tire and everything in my car. and my best runs were:

60' 330 1/8 mph 1000 1/4 MPH
2.095 6.000 9.209 76.81 11.980 14.326 95.56
2.135 6.006 9.231 76.38 12.015 14.369 95.26
2.173 6.085 9.311 76.47 12.094 14.445 95.36

This was my first time at a dragstrip. I couldnt get my lauches down at all. I tried slipping every time. I will try dumping it next time. Does it look like that all I need to work on is my launching?(for those of you that know how to look at times and decipher what somebody is doing wrong)

Your 1/8th mile MPH was higher than mine. I don't know what that means.
By the way, I got a decent video of your 14.445 run. It's 45 MB though...

If you think you are shifting slow (the times indicate you potentially are), this thread has a link to shifting while running a 13.94 http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?s=&a...st&p=824042

Oh man, Id would still like to see it. Yeah, it just means that I was slipping the hell out of the clutch on the launch. I had no idea because I was so nervous. But I launched a couple times on the way home and noticed I was slipping it bad. I hate to do it alot, but I did a launch at 5k and dumped the clutch and I garantee that was a 1.xxx 60 ft time. I think I may have to do that next time. Didnt you run a lower 14.1xx on a redlight one time too.

I have a question. Do you think that you can overdrive this car? That looks slow compared to the way I shift. Is this one of those cars where you have to slow down and be smoother to go faster?
