Thought we ought to get some pics of the RX-8 in here. I love it, but it's not very practical for family use (as if I would care...) ;-)

Price will probably be around US$40000 or so...

The RX-8 not practical? It has got 4 full-size sportseats, quite a lot legroom in the back (for a sportscar) and a (little?) trunk. So explain me why it isn't practical.. :sarc

Are you out of your mind!

Never, EVER buy a second car. Having only one auto is the only way you can demand using the RX-8 yourself. Otherwise, your wife will only tell you: "YOU can take the Mazda2. I will take the RX-8"...and if you know the first thing about women, you obey...;)

A little bit about practical issues.
What's your milage per year? I live in small country,
with little distances. Still I drive little more than 30'000 km per year.
In three years it makes 100'000 km. It's quite Ok for regular
engines - I can sell my car as normal, 3 years old car.
AFAIK rotor engines don't run so long without significant repairing of
engine. Or the limit was 100'000 miles? I don't remember exactly.
Anyway if somebody uses RX-8 as a everyday car for 3 years, he should
expect that after this period engine possibly needs some significant
maintenance. It means costs either you sell the car or continue to use it.
Besides, I don't know the situation in USA or other places, but it's quite hard
to find a good rotor engine specialists here in Latvia. So, if I buy RX-8, have some
problems with engine - I don't have any possibility to fix it in my country.

Rotaries last a lot longer than 100,000 kms. The last generation of RX-7 was a little troublesome, but that was more the turbochargers fault and inadequate cooling system than the engine itself. The RX-8 is naturally aspirated, so it should last ages. I had an 3rd generation RX-7 with over 170,000 kms on it when I sold it, and it purred like a kitten.
Hang out on www.rx8forum.com for more information (and pictures). www.rotarynews.com is also a good source.

I forgot to mention that a fully loaded RX-8 shouldn't go for much more than $30000 US, with base versions around the $26000 US mark.

But on the other hand she can tell you; "Go on your bike, I'll take the RX-8".. Then you wish you followed my advice.. ;)

If the RX8 comes into the US at much over 26-28ish base, it will be doomed to failure. I see it's main competition from the likes of the Infiniti G35 coupe, which, if I recall correctly, will run in the low 30's.

Aside from it's main competition, the RX8 is a versatile car, and can have many competitors in different classes. I see the following situations on compeition:

1. An upscale sports coupe. For those who want a sports coupe, the RX8 is pretty much perfect. Rear seats and rear doors that are more practical and convenient than an typical sports coupe (such as the Celica, the RSX, etc.); and performance that will leave those coupes scratching their heads. Those who want a performance coupe with a higher level will find it worth the extra few grand to go from a Celica or RSX to the RX8.

2. The RX8 also has the capability to steal some market share from the small performance sedans (for lack of a better term) out there as well. When I say sedan, I don't mean four doors, but I mean the class of Audi A4's, the BMW 3 series' and the Lexus IS (as well as the aforementioned G35). Mazda's main issue here will be the badge, (with less room perhaps a secondary issue) hence a requirement to offer at a little lower price. The RX8 is practical enough to bring the people from those cars to a raised level of performance. It may not offer as much room, but those cars aren't overly roomy to begin with. Those who need room aren't going to buy the A4's, the G35's, etc.

3. Finally, the RX8 can steal sales in the sports car market. Competitvely priced with the new Z, it appears to offer superior handling, and is smaller and lighter as well. If these two cars do well in this segment, we'll see more of them - a resurgence of the mid-90's wave of spectacular sports cars that are somewhat affordable (perhaps including another RX7, hmmm?) The bottom line here is that the RX8 will offer performance to rival sports cars, even though it will be bigger and heavier, it will be able to steal customers from that market. People will think "Hey, I can get sports car performance with useable rear seats!", which will appeal to a lot of people.

Relesed at a price range of 26ish to say, 32ish would give the RX8 the price point to steal sales from all three areas.

If I were to consider an RX8, I would personally fall into the first category. It wouldn't be able to replace my sedan (which I need due to family); but I don't consider it a sports car, either. Having a small coupe with usable rear seats and sportscar like performance would make a perfect second car.

Oh, and might I add:

"The front of the RX-8 is different than what we've seen on the pictures & adds from Mazda"

Perhaps there is still hope that someone did slap that stupid smile off the front fascia.
