THE CARMAKER'S ALL-NEW TWO-LITRE ENGINE IS SMOOTH REVVING AND THE CABIN OOZES BUILD QUALITY

IT ALL feels very familiar, but radically different at the same time. I remember piloting the first-generation Mazda MX-5 around a racing circuit during an advanced driving course. It had a superb chassis and just the right amount of power that one could exploit to its limit easily, yet not worry about any unpleasant surprises.

In the cabin, the 6 is unlike most Mazdas. It oozes build quality with plenty of space. The dashboard, with silver-painted details, feels like it has been customised personally, while the instruments are classy to look at. Too bad then that the front seats lack the right support for a car so athletic. But it is in performance where the 6 scores a distinction. Its all- new two-litre engine is smooth revving and provides generous low-end torque, which is useful for town driving. Its chassis is taut and the well-sorted suspension feels like a pricier European saloon. Throw in a precise and quick steering into the equation and the 6's rivals may start having sleepless nights.
