I've noticed that when I'm coming to a stop, say at a stop sign or traffic light, I find its difficult to move the shifter into first gear, even at speeds under 10 mph. Now once I come to a stop, this is not problem, but I would think you'd be able to shift to first with out issue under 10 mph. I know the syncros obviously keep you from doing this at higher speeds, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this or if its something that gets better after more break in (I have like 6000 miles on the car). I never force the tranny into any gear, you can always feel when your good to shift, but it would be nice to be able to prepare to launch the car again, espec. near stop signs.

That's normal in every manual trans car, because of the wider ratio spread between 1st and 2nd. The synchronizer is having to do a LOT of extra work to speed up the gearshaft for a 2 - 1 downshift (extra work = extra wear on the synchro). Don't do this unless you're double-clutching the downshift, and even then only at low speed (<10 mph).

I haven't noticed this problem yet, thankfully. I've seen WRX owners complain of the same thing. Obviously different cars altogether, but still, frustrating.

I've had the same thing on every manual transmission car I've driven. Sounds like it is designed that way.

All the manual trans cars I have ever driven have done this: escort, ranger, mustang, thunderbird, contour.

Well you should never downshift to first gear in a manual car while it is movin in the first place..so i dont see the problem. I guess the design of it is making sure you dont
