What is with these companies? Man I totally loved when Rogers was the cable supplier in my area.

Here is my story:

Rogers released Digital Cable, so I got the digital box, and was paying $10/month. After about 8 months, Shaw and Rogers did a switch with subscribers, and Shaw took over the cable area where I lived. Fine so be.

Now Shaw brings out some POS motorola digital box. They said I had to change over to it, and I said no, because its a POS (well I didn't say it in those terms, but you know...)...

Anyways a few weeks later my cable stops working, and they say I have to upgrade. Fine so be. I goto the only retailer they had at the time, and lucky enough my friend who had 2 jobs, was working there. She changed the boxes for me, sold it to me for $50 bucks, and I no longer had to pay $10/month. That was maybe 1-2 years ago. I'm happy... I did ask her at the time about any future boxes, and she said that Shaw will upgrade me to them since I own the box. Cool, sounds good since I wanted to get rid of this POS as soon as possible.

Now Shaw has released a HDTV digital box, so finally TV will look clear on my 53" HDTV. I just gave them a call, and they said there are no upgrading options, just to buy the box at the price of $699!!!!!

She said they have no payment plans (ie: like charging $10/month like before) and she says if I buy the HDTV box the old one is mine, and I can sell it if I want.

Tell me how gay that is, $699 for the HDTV box, and NO other options but to buy it outright...

Just did some more research the HDTV box that Rogers has is $599, but you can get a $100 programming credit if you order any of their digital channels, which I was planning on doing once I get the HDTV box, so Rogers is about $200 cheaper than Shaw.

I've seen the HDTV sample shaw/rogers is pumping out on the lone HDTV channel.

My reaction was: what's the big friggin deal about HDTV.

1st of all, maybe the sales set it up wrong I though HDTV is supposed to be 16:9 and not 4:3. This may be a content problem which I'll get to later.

2nd, the qality is not what's promised. It's no better than my digital cable now.

Now this may be a content problem. I think in order to take advantage of HDTV, all shows must be shot with HDTV equipments. From cameras to production and transmission. And I don't think they are here yet and won't be for a least 2-3 more years.

And what I readly want to watch HDTV for?

Movies - DVD is better and newer than any cable channel can offer including PPV
Drama - It's the story you're going for anyway. Not the scenery.
Comedy - Great, now I can see how fake the set REALLY is.
Reality Show - Wow! You really can see the worm wriggling in the contestant's mouth on Fear Factor.

What HDTV may be good for:

Sports - Cool, you can see every dimple on the ice
Travel show - Be in Hawaii but never left home
Porn - So that's THE G spot! (But now the hairy ass really jumps at ya!)

I'll wait til at least half my block got one than I'll jump on board.
