Sh-awd= Scam

This is a rant. But I hate being mislead.

:swearin: :irate:

I remember being told and led to belive that honda/acura's SH-AWD was the worlds most advanced awd system, and that it could transfer 100% of the power to any of the 4 wheels. But after watching dealer testing I started to question this.

At the dealer test they had CX7, Murano, X3 etc. When they wanted to show how good their AWD was they drove two wheels of an RDX onto slipery plastic, and jambed a piece of fire wood under the front tire on the other side. When they started to give it gas the two wheels (left side) where spinning before any of the others, with more gas came more spin until it was able to overcome the fire wood. But the left side wheels kept spinning. This made me wonder and start questioning what I was told. Then they did the same thing with a CX7, and had the same result, although it appreard to require less throttle input. This made me wonder even more. Since our AWD system and the CX7 was supposed to be inferior to the mighty SH-AWD

After looking into it more it looks like there is some word games going on in the Honda commercials. Their system can only transfer 45% of the power to the rear wheels, under hard exceleration or when the fronts start to slip. Then it can split that 45 between the two rears. Not all 100% to any one wheel. And the front diff is open so there is not torque split capabilities up front.

So what I think this means is that the SH-AWD is only able to do a 55/45 versus our 50/50, but then the rear diff is a computer controlled rather than our mechanical diff. Suddenly our system doesnt sound so bad to me.

I have a 06 RL with SH-AWD as well as a Mazdaspeed 6, the RL system is definitely more sophisticated. The RL handles pretty well in the wet with its ability to vary the rotation of the wheels side to side. Seems to make the car feel more planted but the car isn’t really meant to be a sports sedan. I haven’t really driven the M6 in anything but rain but it seems that the stock tires are not amazing in the rain. I’ve had or have other cars with 4wd and the Acura seems to be quickest at reacting to slip as it seems to be adjusting a lot but you don’t really feel or notice it.
I've become more appreciative of our haladex-type system. It can perform a 100-50 split...the same that and EVO can perform.
[/b]
Except its not the same as the evo can perform the system is COMPLETELY diffrent. The evo starts off at 50-50 driven by true diffrentials. It does not have to become AWD. Haldex is a coupling based system unable to account for diffrences in rotational movement of the wheels. It is primarily front wheel drive with a PTO that couples the rear wheels.

Ok assclown please explain to me how the electro magnetic solenoid activates to engauge the clutchpack in the coupling located forward of the rear dif to engauge the rear wheels, and also explain how the % of power sent to the rear it determined by the frequency of the pules sent to the solenoid. Don't forget to mention that the drive shaft going to the coupling is always spinning and the computer that operates the coupling is a seperate entity from our ECU but receives information from it as well as, but not limited to, wheel speed, throttle position, brake engagement, driving style/conditions to determine weather to enter it's 3 modes of sport, dry, or snow. Importantly the temerature sensor is to ensure that with an increased frequency the clutch pack does not over heat and become damaged, readings from this temp sensor have the ability to shutdown the solenoid to prevent any futher increase in heat. Other factors including DCS, e-brake, and tire slippage can also affect the AWD computer's decisions. Would you like me to go into how the solenoid itself works with magnetic fields having to do with electromagnetic flux, inertia, and energy capacity? Or maybe the clutchpack with its multiple layers of semiabrasive surfaces properly distnced to not touch eachother till a force overcome the spring rate holding them apart and allows them to transfer motion, similar to thow the clutchpacks in an ATX change gears?

Could you please explain to me how the EVO, S4, and STi work for me too? I'd really appreciate hearing how the electronic controlled mechanical STi center diff works as well as the other vehicle's viscous and mecanical center difs and LSDs allow 4 wheel motion.

Like I said I don't need a lecture on how my AWD works and the next time you feel like mouthing off to someone try taking your head out of your ass so you can be heard more clearly. :thefing:

OK. That pretty much covers everything for this thread. :) Have a nice day!

Always some troll that has to go and ruin a perfectly good thread.
Wow, some MS6 folks are really touchy when it comes to the AWD system used, hehe.

Cmon, putting out the statement about the "same" torque split ability as the Evo, you must have known you were gonna get the replies you got.

Everybody needs to go :drive: already.

As somebody already hinted at, SH-AWD is great on paper, but if it isn't applied as well as it could be. I still want to see how it works in a more sports-oriented car. Also curious about the long-term reliablity and power-handling ability of the system.

I just don't appreciate a newb (bani) telling me I don't know my stuff.

I only meant to say the MS6 can perform a 50/50 split up to a 100/0 split.

The Evo can perform a 50/50 split up to a 100/0 split.

They get there by different means (and yes the EVO is a true full time AWD and the MS6 is not)

yep. the MS6 ain't no evo. not by a long shot. wonder why people here insist on comparing the MS6 to a rally car... apparently they keep thinking their MS6 is something it isn't.

Welcome to the site. You'll see plenty of that here. There's a thread from a couple weeks ago where some dumbass compares the MS6 to a Corvette, C6 no less!, and talks about how the Vette "doesn't impress him". . .lol

yeah and an RDX is absolutly no MS6 so why is that being compared to it or being discussed in the MS6 forum? Oh wait because they were comparing it's AWD...just like I was comparing the AWD of the EVO to it.

I have no dilusions about what my MS6 is or isnt. If I wanted an EVO I would own one instead of my MS6.
if anything is a "scam" it's haldex, not sh-awd.

have you ever made a post contributing to the discussion of a topic? Or do all of your posts come down to saying:
*insert topic of discussion here* sucks on the mazdaspeed6
[/b]
If you don't want to add something and only want to complain and bash others I suggest you head over to the srt4 forums

the whole point of this topic was Wheels observed a test that the Haladex-type (it's not actually haladex) AWD of the CX-7 outperformed Honda/Acura AWD
The demonstration targets a weakness in the AWD system in an artifical scenario that will probably never happen in real life. Thus the beauty in marketing.[/b]
yep agree 100% it was a contrived "test". i love salesdroids.
strtfghtr and bani need to cool it, pleae just ignore each other if you have to. I don't want to close this thread!
OWNED!!! by the mod gods lol j/k bani, stop talking trash strtghtr knows his stuff (sh!t)
please close the thread, it's just troll city in here.
yea you are the leader and only troll you momo
Last chance. EVERYONE needs to play nice or we will be not so nice.
