Thankfully I came across this forum. I can’t find a good video to remove and replace the alternator on my 2015 Mazda6 and need a more experienced opinion.

I’ve gotten two quotes (labor cost + the replacement) that run me over $600 plus I can’t purchase the part elsewhere. Best I save over $400 doing it myself.

Of what I can find on YouTube, I’ve seen people removing their passenger side wheel to reach the alternator. Is there a way around this?

I found this as a response to a similar question. Can anyone confirm this method will work?

What the flying fuck, $600.. no. Just drop the belly pan. I mean, did you even look under the hood yet? It can almost be pulled out the top.

Trust me, I thought the same thing. I didn’t say a thing to the person on the line. I’m sure they held the same sentiment.
Yes! I’ve taken a look at it, I was going go at it that way, but when I checked for a video people were going at it from the passenger side. Is there enough clearance to reach all the bolts from the top?

I replaced my alternator my self on my 2014 mazda 6gt. It should be similar to mine.I too could not find any good video's about how to replace it. Then I found the repair manual page on replacement of the alternator online. You have to unbolt the ac compressor but not disconect it. You just push aside the ac compressor with the ac lines still connected and the reach down and disconect the alternator after you have disconected the battery. There was one trick bolt that would not come off but it did not need to in order to unbolt the ac compressor.

If I find the manual page I will forward it .
Good Luck

Mine was an early model 2014–like the first in Texas (manuf in 2012). It has some things that just aren’t quite the same. I did my alternator and it will not go down. All the AC hoses are rigid and they won’t move. It WILL fit through the top, but it is one hell of a jigsaw puzzle. It only fits in one orientation, and it is sideways cockeyed. You still have to have the wheel off especially if you replace the belt and idler—as you should.

If you buy one, be sure you have it tested. My first replacement was dead—regulator was shot. I had to do mine in a remote dorm parking lot at 95° for my daughter. I would have jumped at $600.

You’re not kidding, Helluva jigsaw puzzle.

I’m going to test my alternator again tomorrow, cabin lights still flickering. Picking up that belt and idler while I’m at it(y)

Here is a great video, Click here, that I found when I was replacing mine.
Nice video. Wish I’d found that. We ended up doing almost exactly the same thing. I suspect he left out a lot of cussing and trial-and-error steps. ;-)

Couple of notes. Mine was 8 years old >100k miles so I replaced the belt and tensioner too. Seems like a good idea no matter the mileage while you’re there.

Also, be careful with the electrical connectors. Each is unique in how they disconnect. Be patient so you don’t break them. I had to partially reconstruct one. Also, the wires are not long enough to get out of the way. Be careful you don’t damage any fragile wires, connectors—either those on the engine or alternator. We stressed about it, but they survived.

Borrow a friend. It would be a lot harder by yourself. They don’t need to be an expert—just willing to help.

All of this is why I paid my buddy to change it for me lol. I also had him change the belt and tensioner too because he already had it apart.

Let us know how it goes.
I got it tested, alternator coming up as bad still. Autozone associate let me know the belt looked like it was slipping. Told me to check the electrical connector was put back properly and tighten the tensioner.

Called the neighbor who helped me out and he said I should get the battery tested with the terminals off to see if the previous alternator fried it. Going to check the idler and belt again if we take it out.
