Do a search for "Radar Detectors" and you will find A LOT of info and recommendations. I'm in the process of picking one so I just read thru a few threads and they helped me a lot.

V1 is the best if you want to spend $400. If you want cheaper, there's no clear winner.

It's a tough call.

I have a Valentine 1 myself, but I get a lot of falses, especially K band. I think this is one of the main complaints of radartest and radarbusters. Currently, though, I wouldn't trade it for anything because I really do love the arrows. I assume Mike Valentine has the arrow idea patented, as I would expect that the other manufacturers would follow suit on such an invaluable feature. I'll be glad whenever the patent runs out so that I can switch manufacturers, because Valentine is pretty much behind the times on many other things. I think ol' Mike's ego of being regarded as the "best of the best" has gotten to him and subsequently Valentine has slacked in the development department. And their selling point on "constantly upgradeable" is great, but the upgrades are way pricier than they should be (typically half the cost of a new detector, although on the positive side, each new upgrade performed does renew your 1-year warranty).

All that said, I'm looking at a Beltronics Vector 965 for my wife. We had a cheap little Express 935 but the speaker on it died. They are sending me another speaker, but if that doesn't fix the problem I'm pretty sold on the high end Vector series (plus they offer trade-in discounts if you order direct and send in your old detector). The Vector 965 and 995 are about as sensitive as you can get, and the 965 can be had for around $200. The 995 scores very high almost everywhere, but the added features (soft case, Ku band for the Europeans, some faceplates, selectable bands) don't warrant the extra cost in my opinion. The main thing I want out of a detector is false-free K and Ka detection as sensitive as possible, and this is where the high-end Vectors deliver. Bel also sells the "Professional series," but their sales representatives couldn't give me a great reason on why they are better than the Vectors aside from the "redesigned professional look" ... sounded like a BS answer to me.

Good luck with your purchase. Whatever you choose, it'll probably save your arse at least a few times if you are an intelligent speeder.

The generally accepted top four are (in order of price, not quality necessarily):

Valentine 1 $400
Beltronics RX-65 $329
Escort Passport 8500 X50 $300 or $329 (blue display)
Beltronics Vector 995 $280

After that, it's a toss up. I paid #110 for my Whistler Pro 73 and I absolutely love it. It's saved me three times now, paying for itself three times over. It falses more than the "Top Four" but its detection range is very good.

hey i have a question. on my speed6, i have no nav system, so theres an empty compartment. If its in that compartment will it decrease the effectiveness of the radar detector?

crud, i was hoping i could hide it in that compartment.

Yes, hiding it in that compartment will impede the radar detector. The best place to mount the detector is as low as possible on the front windshield. The reason for this is not so much for a radar gun, but in case you are in the unlucky search area of a cop with a LIDAR. Like mentioned above, the radarbusters.com site is really full of allot of useful information. YES, they do not sell the V1, but they do sell the Escort 8500 X50. This is not the most expensive on the market but one of the best bang for the buck. I've had mine for over a year now and it has paid for itself many times over. 6ownzU mentioned being able to see how many bands he is picking up, with the X50 you can monitor up to 8 bands visually at any time. Hope this helps.

I have to agree whole-heartedly with the Escort 8500 X50. That thing has saved me so many times (more highway driving than city) than I can say.

I'm a pretty mellow driver in the city, but highways....whew. I let the big dog eat sometimes, if ya know what I'm sayin'!

without veil or laser jammer, LIDAR detection don't mean nothing as by the time your RD give a laser warning, the cop already got your speed. another option some people choose is to mount it high by the rear view mirror, give the RD a little more range on Radar such as over the hill situation.

if its that important, you can invest in a "seperate" system, where the receiver and the display are seperate unit and you can install the display anywhere you want, of course they are usually more expensive
