What do you guys think about them? Useful? or a waste of money? I want to get one but the problem is i don't know if i can hide it and use it at the same time because i don't want my car broken into or anything. If i put it in the front map compartment do you think it'll still work or does it need to be outside to work? Thanks in advance.

I don't have a radar detector but will be getting one in the future. I think they are useful, the problem is most radar detectors don't work well in the city. I would also look to see if there were any laws banning the use of radar detectors in your area. If you want stealth you can buy a radar/laser detector that hides your detector from a radar detector detector electronically. I am either going to get a beltronics STi Driver $449.95beltonics.com or the valentine one $399.00 Valentine1.com Good luck finding a radar detector, Hope I was helpful.

Escort 8500 has saved my butt too many times to count. Don't waste your money on the cheap ones, they will not work as good as the expensive ones.

I used to have one for my camaro...still do. but my 6 doesnt get the 5-0 attention that car does. I've always heard they are illegal in all states except for mine (jersey), and usually if for some ungodly reason you do get pulled over with one, they sometimes hit you with view obstruction, or unnecessary equipment fine on top of your speeding ticket. I got pulled in PA once in the camaro and have never been more uncomfortable explaining to that officer why I had one when he asked...umm UFO protection? Better to not speed. Having one usually gives you a sense of urgency in the pedal foot...and you are never invincable to breaking laws. Plus...where I am...and probably everywhere else, if cops see you speeding without using the gun...they'll hit you with wreckless operation. I say skip it.

k thanks a lot guys, my mom said she would get me a radar detector so i have to keep it under $130 so i was planning on getting a cobra or something like that price range. I really would like to get the escort but it just seems too much and i would never be able to explain to my mom why she should pay 3 times more, when she doesn't even have to get me a radar detector in the first place. What i'm trying to figure out right now is where to put the radar detector, do you guys just put it on the front windshield? what if some guy walks buy and decides they want that radar detector and brake into your car? Or do you guys just take it out when you feel like you'll need it? thanks for the great replies guys, I really appreciate it.

1. Visit radarbusters.com and radardetector.net. VERY informative.

2. NEVER EVER buy a Cobra. AKA Crapra. Shortest detection range of ALL RDs and they leak so much RF that they set off other RDs.

3. RDs are useful if you understand their limitations. Against laser -- useless. They are ticket-notifiers unless you have a jammer or at least some stealth to your car (Veil, dark color, etc). Against most radar, they work very well, but again, they are not panaceas. The forums will educate you.

4. The top ones are (not necessarily in order):
-- Valentine V1 $400
-- Beltronics RX-65 $300
-- Escort Passport 8500 X50 $329
-- Beltronics Vector 995 $280
-- Whistler Pro 73 (what I have in my car) $150

Others rank in there, and the list shuffles around, but those are the big ones. I have the WHistler Pro 73 and absolutely love it. It's saved me twice now. 4 points and $170 in fines. For the $130 price range -- go with the Whistler over ANY Crapra. You can actually get the Pro 73 for $110 from Caplink Technologies online.

But again -- learn about them. Read a lot. THEN buy.

honestly, i'd pocket the 130 bucks and stick to the speed limit.

the cobra is useless.

just an aside....a few years back, my friend and I were parked at work right next to each other, away from the crazy parking lot drivers, and when we went out to start the cars (in the snow no less) his window was broken and detector gone from his windshield mount. Mine, which was dash mounted, was still there. Perhaps his was better than mine LOL, but it goes to show that if its gonna happen, its gonna happen. It always boggles my mind that those satellite radio and gps systems that people mount to the dash and leave there aren't ripped off....but then again, maybe they are. Thats the chance you take. From that incident, I always removed mine and threw it under the seat...then velcro-ed it back on when I was driving. Again though...if you arent gonna go ALL out...I'd skip it.

That's why I disconnect mine and store it in the center console whenever I park the car.

*COUGH*UPYOURS*COUGH*

:D

I decided after the ticket in August that I was tired of paying Colorado's secondary road tax. I got tired of getting busted when I wasn't watching my speed while the street racing shitbag in his fart-pipe-equipped Honda got off scott-free.

So I bought one after that. Surprisingly -- I speed LESS with it. It keeps my mind on my surroundings and keeps me much more alert. Even if I have something on my mind, when the RD says, "Ka Band, Ka Band!" I pay attention.

I do the disconnect and store under seat also. It only takes me 5 seconds to do it.

A RD was the best investment I ever made for my car, just be sure to get a nice one its one of those you get what you pay for type of things.

The only RD illegal state is Virginia and Washington DC, there are actually signs saying this when you enter the state. As far as all the other states they are prefectly legal.

Well I've been using my cobra XRS and the range is excellent and I can vouch for them working, like I said it saved me from getting 2 tickets this year! And I'm not the only one that likes it too!

I'm glad you like it, but check out the independent testing done on radarbusters.com. And please -- drive at least 500 yards away from me so you're leaky RD doesn't set off mine. :) (J/K)

wrong.

on certain sections of 81/84/17 in NYS, i see signs that say "radar dection devices are prohibited. punishable by...blah blah blah [probably death]" yet in other sections of NY, you don't see anything.

in regards to legality, you need to do your homework, assuming you actually care.

VA is really hardcore about it tho, they have that HUGE sign on 95 that will scare the bejesus out of any radar dector user.

Ok, I got one for you...this is what you do...you buy a leather glove...make sure its nice and old...and smack your mom untill the stupidity gets knocked the fuck outta her. OMFG what kind of mom would actully BUY one, let alone give permission for one..."Here you go son! Have fun killing yourself!" Moms like this need to be pulled out into the street and shot in the head for all to see....

Wow. I don't think you could have been a bigger asshole about that if you'd tried. Congratulations.
