My gf's car has around 79k miles on it and as far as I know has never had a transmission fluid flush. The fluid is brown looking so I'm sure it should be changed out asap. So the question is should I get one done now or will that do more harm than good? Or should I do a simple drain and refill? Thanks for the help.

I'd just do a couple drain and fills. At least 3. Maybe drop the pan, clean it and change the filter as well. An inline filter couldn't hurt either.

NOW! Do it now. Definitely full flush & filter. Also consider a tranny cooler (especially on an automatic). Heat is the tranny's worst enemy. Brown is not a good sign (brown means it got hot).

you can not change the filter on these cars. You can add a secondary inline filter that is replaceable...... but not the stock filter(it is built into the trans).

at 78k and brown, I would be be leary of flushing, but rather a drain and fill would be recommend. Any "damage" that has already been done will be flushed out and thus make the trans worse than it already is. if you drain and fill the trans, the remaining parts that have shaved off will rebond to the trans instead of being removed and weaking the already damaged trans.

So should I get a flush or just a drain and refill? because I'm still hearing conflicting suggestions. It doesn't drive any different and has no problems but i'm still a little worried since it is brown.

I'd stick with a drain and refill.

I've never had a transmission flush, and I've owned both MTX and ATX with no issues whatsoever.

A simple drain and fill will work as needed. After that, keep an eye on the fluid and make sure that the brown doesn't come back.

If the brown comes back do I have to do another drain and refill? And is there a bigger problem?
It will still be brownish since you're only gonna drain about 1/3 of the fluid. The rest is in the converter and lines. That's why you need to do a few drain and fills.
It's just brown because it is burnt from heat and time it's been in use. If shes shifting fine you should be OK.

So I have to do around 3 drain and refills? Yeah the car is shifting fine, so should i just stick to this method and not do the flush? Also how much atf mercon V fluid do i need for the car to do the drain and refills? And do i do it all the draining and refilling at once or after certain intervals? Thanks javim for your time helping I really appreciate it!

First off make sure you use the right transmission fluid. Not sure which model you have 6i or 6s but they use different fluid depending on year and tranny.

Actually if you have a 03-05 6i Mazda calls to use Mazda M-V fluid. I've used Mercon V for several years now w/o issue. If anything it has lessened cold start shift shock. Just wanted to throw that out there FYI.

If the fluid is as bad as it is I would try to do it at once if you can. But to do that you'll need to drain, fill, drive around the block to mix new fluid and old. drain and fill again. I'd drain and fill at least 3 times.
Also I'd recommend draining and filling every year or so to keep the fluid fresh and clean.
No problemo for the help,Man, happy to help.
