Needed an oil change and my check engine light came on a few times, i was at like 4k miles without a change so i thought it might have just been something to do with that. I took it to Mazda and they changed my oil and did a diagnostic test for the CEL...

I was checking out and the bad news hits me, he tells me that the EGR Valve is sticking, when I asked exactly what it did, he said it had something to do with the exhaust recirculating into my engine.

So he looks up the price for me and writes it really small, couldnt believe what i was seeing for a second and then when he showed me on the computer it said $674 to replace the part.

On my recite, it says their is an EGR Fault and its a $699 replacement..

To top it all off.. I have trans fluid leaking from my axle seal.

Anyone had this happen or know anything about it? I want to get it fixed ASAP.

EGR is part of emissions wouldn't that be covered by manufacturer emission warranty ?

Sounds like their bid includes replacing the entire EGR valve. Do you know why they thought this was necessary?
It's probably just caked with soot and stuck open. Or, the solenoid is faulty. Either way, you can do this work at home and save quite a bit of money.

Hey, I had the same CEL pop up a few weeks ago. I searched and it led me to a couple steps before doling out that amount of money to the stealership.
1. Bought a bottle of GumOut. Put in in an empty tank and then filled up. CEL gone - 2 weeks so far :)
2. If CEL comes back, the EGR pipe and valve can be cleaned. If I am willing to attempt it then I'm sure you can do it too. You just need some basic tools. There are a few threads around that give step-by-step instructions.

mine came on and off for that cel for a month or so, it no longer comes on any more. I wouldnt worry about it,

dude, what?

"CEL" and "I wouldn't worry about it" are mutually exdclusive terms.

why? I pulled the code, saw what it was for, know that its not a huge deal and that egr's tend to get stuck, but can also get unstuck, and after coming on a few times it no longer does. i wouldnt get my panties in a bunch over an egr cel.

Me neither.

I get it now that I've done the EGR delete, so I just verify the code and clear it with DH and it stays away for at least another drive cycle. The EGR fault doesn't set on the first cycle, only if it is present for the second....

Oh, and I don't wear panties...., yet!

I thought the AP had the ability to "overlook" or turn off certain error codes. Well, I heard about it once. Do we not have that ability yet? It'd be nice for the EGR delete.

The current version of ATR can hide the code, but not the CEL itself. What a PITA! Cobb is working on fixing this issue, but I'm not sure if it will be in the newest version due out this week. It WILL eventually be fixed, according to Trey.

Thanks everyone, I bought some carbon cleaner stuff, I think its called like sea foam or something, and put it in my tank and then filled her up. CEL has still been coming off and on the last day or two so I think im going to take off the EGR and clean her up. Anyone know where to find any guides for doing this safely, I know nothing about the EGR but most of the guides on here make it easy enough for anyone that has a brain to figure out.
