I'm getting ready to buy a white MS6 and had an idea about better looking wheels, why not polish the lip and powder coat the factory wheels black(not the center cap)? What do you guys think?

no close ups cause it's photo shopped. I think it's an inexpensive way to improve the looks till I could get some really nice wheels. I'm diggin it I think.

imho, dark wheels on a white car look very nice. If the cost of powder coating isn't extremely high, I'd do it, if you really like the stock wheels. Otherwise, I'd consider getting different wheels.

no I used the low res version so a close up looks really blocky and bad.

Looked into this a month or so ago. $90 per wheel...just powdercoating. Masking off the lip and polish would probably double the price. Could get some really nice aftermarkets for that much.

^^I'd look at aftermarket too if it's gonna cost that much.

hey I got an idea. Once you get the car, to see how it looks before actually doing it, use this on the wheels:

http://www.autobarn.net/duplicolor-spray-on-bra.html

just mask off the edge and center, spray on, check out, wash off. Will prolly take you half an hour. Oh... and I guess you might want to avoid painting the rotor and the brakes :)

It should give you a good idea of how it'll look, even though it's not totally black (which might be actually a better choice anyways...)

edit: yah but if they charge you close to $200 per wheel, forget it and go aftermarket....

no it would be more like $150 for the set. I'd have to polish the lip, mask them off and remove the center cap, and of coarse they would have to be clean. So for $200 total I think it's a good option. If someone quoted you that much per wheel go somewhere else. If you prep the wheels all they have to do is spray them (30 min max) and back them, black is pretty cheap too. I might try the spray on bra just for kicks. Good idea.

i was quoted 120 for all 4. $30 per wheel, but i also have to get the wheels taken off tires taken off mounting and balancing. which is $100 right there. so yeah, but the biggest thing would be being without my car for like 2 days... that makes me sad

Are we talking PAINT or POWDERCOATING????

If you can get them POWDERCOATED for $30 a wheel, that's a steal. I was told $90 only because they have to send the wheels out to have them sandblasted to remove the clearcoat. After that, they are then powdercoated (and oven-baked), and then re-clearcoated. It was about a 3 or 4 day process.

I'm not a powdercoating specialist, but I would think a 30 minute job would be a little sketchy.

Sorry, didn't mean to burst the bubble. I do like the look....might reconsider my original powdercoating if I can get a good deal on it.
