Our car was totaled yesterday. Fortunately, both my wife and daughter are OK, other than soreness and minor bruising. Also fortunate was the fact I hadn't done the front struts and headliner yet. Anyway, we're looking for another car. We all loved the 2004 Lapis Blue 6S. It was loaded.
I'm wondering if I can get someone with a Mazda6i to chime in and give me some opinion. The last one had the 6 cyl. and the mileage wasn't as good as we would have liked. Are there any special maintenance issues w/ the 6i? It's just the family car, so no racing will be done.

NO. OMG a lapis blue gone... :(

Glad you guys are okay. Get a mazda 6i and get it in blue :) it gets 21mpg combined city and highway for me. although 80% of it is city.

Everybody's just sore, Thanks. I'm hoping to find something w/ a little better than 21mpg combined. My Accent gets 24 combined with A/C running and not even taking it easy during the winter using oxygenated gas.

Glad to hear the family is okay, and the Mazda did it's job.

21 MPG is quite low for a 6i, I've seen averages as high as 28 MPG, with highway MPGs well above 30 MPG.

yea. i see about 27-28 when im abusing it. i have got up to 32mpg per tank when being nice.

and when it comes to reliability, the 4 is much better then the v6. none of the cat or spun bearing issues. lol. but the atx 4's are pretty slow. so dont be surprised if your not happy. the manual 4's are about as fast as the automatic v6's. so there not as bad.

I've got a 2008 2.3L four-cylinder with 31,100 miles on the car and over that span have averaged 24.5 mpg combined highway/city, and the car is much faster than the Impala 3.4L V-6 it replaced (I know, that car was much heavier though). But still. Only if I have four people in the car and the air conditioner is on and I need to accelerate quickly going uphill have I wished for more power. The car will accelerate if you punch WOT but the roar will drown out any conversation (and maybe that's good).

Sounds like you might as well keep a V6.... I have an 05 6S and I always get between 24-25 MPG. Winter I get a little less 23.5 or so.

Glad to hear the Family is okay! Good luck with your decision. Also a 3 wouldn't be a bad way to go. Look into the 2.3 hatchback. give a little extra room and a decent motor to boot.

I'm back. Thanks for the concern for the family.Weeks later, my girls are still a little sore, but they're in good shape.
We wound up w/ a 2007 Mazda 6 i Grand Touring. Nice car. Heated leather seats rock. Power from the 4 cyl. is good, not like the 6 cyl., but I still like it. We even have Homelink, so the interior isn't cluttered w/ a remote for the garage door. The self adjusting rearview mirror is great. My ONLY complaint is the volume adjustment on the radio. There is WAY too much change from just one click up or down. We can live with that. Overall, I'd say there's nothing I'd change.
I'm glad I hadn't replaced the front struts or fixed the headliner on the 2004 the weekend before the accident

Thats great that you found another 6. My wife has a 2004 6i and we both love it..! It's seen Vegas twice, Arizona, Seattle and pretty much all of California with out any breakdowns. I have a 2002 c32 AMG but i think i like the comfortness of the 6 better and not to mention the MPG's.. :p

Good choice on the 6i Grand Touring. Lots of amenities, good gas mileage, and still really fun to drive. I really think you'll enjoy it a lot. Who cares if you give up a little power? As you said, it's more a family car. I find my 4cyl 6i can still be fun when you throw it into tiptronic (or whatever mazda calls it)mode and hit some twisties.
