2008, 62k miles. In the last 1k miles, the car has started making (sort of) a clunking noise when turning. Almost as if the CV is skipping a tooth in the gear. It seems to happen more (or at least be more noticeable) at low speeds. I checked the troubleshooting guide for the tranny, but this isn't a "symptom" they list, and the steering section doesn't seem to have a troubleshooting section, so I'm kind of lost. Please tell me it's only the CV joint needing replacement and not a problem with the rack. I can swap a CV, but I generally don't screw around with the PS rack.

Sometimes the clunk is caused by lack of lubrication on the steering shaft. One thing the TSB recommends you do is move the telescoping steering wheel in and out and at different heights to see if you can spread the grease around. I tried this on my car and the clunking has gone away.

Holy crap! My cynicism tells me that life is just not that simple. But I did it anyway and it looks like hte problem may be solved. Now to find a way to add some grease to the shaft. Back to the manual. Thanks for the help!
