Hallo, All.

I'm trying to help a friend out:

2002 Mazda Atenza.
Backfires. Misfiring/Lack of power under acceleration. Smoking.

Also, the wing mirrors decide to fold in/out when you start the car, but that's probably unrelated.

Anyway! To start with, I suggested that he take the car for plug in diagnostic.

When this was done, nothing was able to be read as there was no power at the OBD port.

I've been actively trying to research this, but to help, are there any common known issues, with the above problems, that could give me a headstart?

I would start with another OBD reader. The ports are finnicky on these cars. I have a cheap bluetooth OBD reader that if you use it to reset engine codes it will make the OBD port appear "dead" to some other readers on this car. I've had the best luck using the PC based Forscan software. It's free and reads more of the ECU than a standard reader. it was also able to revive my OBD port after the cheap one messes it up.

Youre in the wrong section. Theres a fuse. (1) OBDII fuse? | Mazda 6 Forums (mazda6club.com)
Strange, from what I'd found so far: OBD fuse is @ Driver's footwell - "ROOM" 10A.

I'd also read that changing the head unit can create this "dead" OBD port.

In the event that it's incorrect, I've taken note of info in your link. I'll go round and have a look at the car myself in a day or two.

That's good to know. My first instinct was that the operator didn't know what he was doing, and that they should try a different shop.

As a first step, I'll see what Reader was initial used, and if we can try a different brand for a second attempt.

Anything Forscan recommends.
