Can someone help me out by telling me which car this engine came out of. It was my dad's car and after a few months of having it after buying second hand developed engine noise then ended up with a hole in the side of I think the block.

No cause the pics are too close up and you dont even say if you have a Mazda 6, so it could literally be any 4 cyl motor. And since youre in OZ, it prob wont be the Ford 2.3l, which i think was US only.

The best I can surmise is that it does not look like a V6 (3.0L), but yeah tough to tell otherwise.

Looks like a plain-jane MZR to me still bolted to the what looks like 5-speed manual. Is it a 2.0 or 2.3 petrol? no idea.
I could be wrong, too.

The only thing that can tell us what the engine is for sure is the engine number, which you have not taken a picture of. It should be located at the transmission side of the block, under the intake manifold:
