I have a 2016 Mazda 6 sport. It does not come with navigation but there is an SD car slot. Dealer wants $399 or $499 (installed) for it. On Amazon these are being sold for $280.

Any advice or suggestions on how I might bgo about getting an SD card and getting it installed for less?

I have not been on the forum and not explored it. I am sure it has been discussed before. I apologize.

This question does seem to come up every few weeks. I agree the cards are ridiculously expensive for how rarely they seem to actually update the maps. I bought my car in August 2015. The SD card had maps from April 2014. IIRC, the first map updates weren't available until late November 2015. The maps were supposed to update every 6 months, not every 18 months.

As far as installing it, you plug the SD card into the slot, and that's pretty much it. Don't force the card. If it doesn't slide most of the way in easily, flip it over. Once it drops into the slot, you'll need to push down a small way to engage the spring-loaded lock. To remove the card, simply push down to release the spring-loaded lock.

As to purchasing a card, be very cautious about third party sellers, and especially wary of anyone selling used cards. After 60 miles, the SD card locks to the VIN of the car. Without hacking the card, I could not give you my card because it wouldn't work in your car - VIN mismatch.

After the card is locked to your VIN, the free mazda toolbox software[1] should let you update the maps. I don't know how it will behave with 3rd party-purchased cards, because I've never tried.

Thank you for stickying this ! I have a 2016 GT, and looks like my map is already out of date. I have turned on speed camera warnings, and the lady screams her head off near past construction sites where a couple of years ago there were speed cameras but arent' there anymore. Also, addresses for new housing development that came up in 2015 and later do not show up on the GPS, but google maps can pull it up perfectly fine. I'll download the Mazda toolbox and try to update my maps . Thank you very much !

What is the latest model for the NAV SD? Can someone post the model numbers with the dates on them? There are a lot of them going on sale on eBay for around $200, but I want to make sure I get the latest one.

I believe this depends on your car's year model. On 2014 Mazdas and earlier, they use TomTom navigation. On 2015 Mazdas and newer they use NavTeq navigation.

Hey all, I have a 2014 GT with tomtom nav in it. What does the SD card do?

Aslo @MilR What is the Mazda toolbox?
The SD card is what contains the map data and some of the navigation software for the car. You won't be able to use the toolbox because you've got the 2014 which uses the TomTom NB1 system. That system utilizes TomTom Home to update your firmware and maps.

For the 2016 model.

Seeing this as the latest one: BHP1 66 EZ1E

I asked the same question here and people told me I could get the chip at Amazon for 150 bucks or so. I mulled things over for a while and decided to go with the overpriced dealer chip at four bills. I can just see getting a contaminated or otherwise hinky chip and going in to the Maz dealer to complain about the screen which is showing the Mars Rover or whatever the Russians programmed into it!

All these gizmos, HVAC, radio, nav, EVERYTHING, come through Central Command and once that sukkah is corrupted you are SKROOD. I had a '13 Charger with major malfunctions in that unit and after eight dealer visits I dumped the car. I should have Lemon Law'd it but that's 20-20 hindsight.

My advice is don't waste your money on ANY Maz nav. My $200 5" Garmin 2598 (bought several years ago) is smarter, more colorful, shows bodies of water far better, is more intuitive to operate, and is more friendly.

My experience with Tom Tom has been DON'T! Though I thought hey, nav is nav, it ain't.
Garmin roolz.
Magellan sukkz.
Tom Tom sukkz worse.

I'd buy a new 6" unit with dash cam instead of this Maz unit. For less money probably.
Just because they make nice cars doesn't mean their geek squad knows their arse from a hole in the ground.

My suggestion, after using the junk Mazda nav for a month or so, is FUGGEDDABOUTIT! My 3-year-old Garmin nuvi 2598 is far superior in every way, except the screen is smaller. Otherwise, the Maz technology seems two generations or so behind. Kinda like the s*** stock Dunlop SP5000 tires they supply.

Ebay sales

Looks like newest Nav (version F) cards available on Ebay for around $100. Anyone make a purchase from Ebay seller?

I purchased the "E" version (BHP166EZ1E) back in February for $99.00 shipped from advantagebuy99 for my 2016; works great, no issues!

Just wanna chime in here really quick. I have a 2014 Touring that did not come with Navigation, dealer wanted an extra $1000 to install it, told them to kick rocks. Found a unit on eBay off a salvaged car, install was super easy. But if I'm being honest IT SUCKS! Almost as bad as what I had in my 2006 Speed6! That thing was terrible.

Anyhow, has anyone bought an updated map card for the Tom Tom version for our cars? I know it sucks but I would still like an updated map, if available

I'm thinking of buying an "Amazon Nav" but I'd like to know if they try to update the maps when I take my car to service. If they some how find out that the Nav is not official the most certainly will play the warranty void card. Also, what happens when you pull out the SD card? Are the maps loaded to the car or do they stay in the SD card? If the Nav reads maps from the card it would be a safe option to remove the card before taking the car to service.

You will be fine leaving it in the car when you go for service. I bought mine from Amazon. It is the same part and number that the dealer was offering. Never had a issue with the dealer. THe NAV does suck. It is very basic. I prefer to use my phone. I only use the Mazda nav as a reference since it does not show traffic and graphics are lame.

Sorry for late reply I just arrive on this forum.
For NB1 update, I don't want to pay nothing for a such crap.
I just carefully follow gpsurl.com's NB1 topic (can't post link because of forum restrictions) and after several attempts finally update all Tomtom features and map for free.

Hi sorry to bring up an old post. I recently bought my 16 Mazda 6 Touring and was looking into buying the SD card for Navigation. I contacted Mazda customer service and was told part # 0000-8FZ09G is what i neededfor my car according to the vin#. I have searched in the sticky page and what i found was a completely different part # for the SD card. Don't really wanna pay dealer price so i was looking on Amazon and found this BHP166EZ1J. Would anyone have any experience with the Amazon SD?

I don't know about the ones on Amazon but I bought mine on eBay and it works perfectly. From what I understand you just have to make sure the card is new because it won't work if used in another car for a certain number of miles. There was no way I was paying dealer price and it worked out well for me, but I know you have to be careful.
