I recently purchased a 06 Mazdaspeed6 with Navigation. I found out that the previous owner spilled either soda or coffee on the remote and making the remote extremely sticky. I found this out when I was giving the interior a through cleaning. My problem is when I press anything on the remote, the buttons either take forever to spring back up or they don't spring back at all. My question is that has anyone on this forum ever taken part their remotes to repair them? I wanted to know if its easy enough for me to take apart and clean it.

Also I've seen some Navigation Remotes that are "new" on sale on Ebay as well. Has anyone on this forum used them before? And is there any reprogramming necessary to make it work with your car just like the Advanced Keys?

Thanks

this will work:

use LPS CFC free Electro contact cleaner (you can also get MAF cleaner or any of the other stuff that basically is an Electonics contact cleaner)

Its a denatured alcohol that will not ruin plastics.

Make sure to get lots of paper towels.

  1. Remove battery from remote if possible. Not 100% needed, but better to be safe.
  2. Get a paper towel, soak it with the spray and then quickly rub it all over your remote. Must be quick because this stuff evaporates fast.
  3. Wait until your remote is dry again.
  4. Re-spray the same paper towel but on another unused side and rapidly rub the remote all over.
  5. repeat the above steps with a new paper towel until it's all clean and non-sticky. Make sure to press in the buttons a little to work it in a bit.
  6. Finally just use a dry paper towel to get any excess alcohol moisture out.
  7. Make sure all stickiness is gone and you can press buttons freely. If you still can't, make sure you get a q-tip soaked in the stuff and rub the inner parts of the buttons, and press them rapidly until you get all the gooeyness out
  8. Once done, let the remote sit for about 3-5 hours in front of an A/c or just in the car on a hot day. It should evaporate any leftover alcohol.
  9. Replace battery and test it out.
Done! You should have a perfect working remote again!

I do this all the time to home electronics I get stuff into. My girlfriend is messy. I don't like people eating/drinking in my car for that reason. Try to avoid it as much as possible.

Thanks for the suggestion! I used 90% Isobutyl Alcohol and it worked. I had to clean it a couple of times to get the crap out of the remote but the paper towel was stained with what looked like soda or coffee residue. Now all the buttons on the remote and the console work as they are supposed to.
