What is the recommended lube for this guy and is it applied directly on the part?

This guy is starting to make an awful noise when I press in the clutch. Not sure if he needs to be lubed or replaced.

IDK, but it's for the clutch/tans. Looks like you have a special part on there to reduce your throws while shifting.

That's a clutch slave cylinder in picture 2. They are known to have a short lifespan on this car. Easy to replace. But check your brake/clutch fluid first. Onlinemazdaparts.com sells the slave cylinder for $65ish. Just got a quote from my dealer for $95.

Not sure what's going on in picture one. Can you describe further?

Lube it how? The rod is sleeved, isn't it? Never heard of lubing it.
If it is on it's way out it'll leave your clutch pedal on the floor after a shift, make the pedal feel spongey, and perhaps problems shifting into gear.

I guess if it's squeeking it probably is the rod.

IIRC Rock auto has slave cylinders for like $15 or something. Yea might fail sooner, but the OEM part is fail anyway.

the first part is actually the shifter. It is the part that actually shifts the transmission.

Edit: Checked the service manual. It doesn't even call it out and say what it is. Don't know what to call it if you need to order parts or anything.

I think several places sell a rebuild kit, which I guess is a new piston, rod, seals? I don't know.

Here's a completely new cylinder:
Online Mazda Parts

I will probably place an order with them this weekend to replace mine.

**EDIT**
Don't know what that shifter part is called either. How about lever arm.
I'm guessing a lithium grease would be best for it.

You are right. That is a James Barone short shift plate which makes the throws a lot shorter. Great mod for the money. James Barone Racing

Brake fluid was completely flushed ~two months ago. I used Motorcraft High Performance brake fluid which improved the feel of the clutch tremendously.

Thanks block8head. I found a post, here, which exemplifies my current problem and what you are describing completely. Even the two sounds it makes. Sometimes the squeaky noise, like in the vid, or sometimes the 'whoosh' sound. Would a universal high performance grease work?

Thanks for checking the manual. I need to invest in one knowing the track record of these cars; it will pay for itself within the first six months.

Did you end up replacing yours? If so, notice any improvements over stock?

The clutch pedal reacts fine, no sticking. :)

The best grease I have found for underhood type stuff in the green "waterproof" grease from Advance auto. Can't think of the name right now, but you will know it when you see it. The shifter mechanism must be cleaned out real good with paper towels before adding lube. You lube it by "squishing" a blob of grease into and through the openings and wiping off the excess.

The clutch slave cylinder push rod squeaks where it contacts the release arm. Just push a bit of the green grease into the contact area and it will be fine.

Indeed. I was under the hood tonight and examined both of these areas. Appears to be a yellow lithium type grease on the shifter mechanism from the factory. Looks like mine could use a fresh dose too. Also examined the slave cylinder and noted the sleeve is not sealed and can be pushed back slightly on the release side. Definitely can dab some grease there. Thanks, Fordza!

JB SSP is money! great mod. Customer service is good too.

I'm going to have to try the Motorcraft fluid. Clutch has all sorts of issues.

You can get a scanned PDF of the manual, only cost you $10. PM me if you need info.

It's on order from Rock. $22.59 with shipping after 5% discount. I checked the part number on other sites, looks like its not just a rebuilt kit, it is the whole slave.
