Modding my 6

I have the 2008 Mazda 6 i sport sedan, and I was wanting to know wether or not i should lower it for a high-end import look, or just get a body kit to make it look like its lowered and new rims. The reason I ask is because i'm deathly afraid of destroying my car or ripping out the transmission if i hit a speed bump or something if it's lowered, alot of people have been telling me it's a bad idea. So i'm comming to you guys for help. Thanks in advance.
