Please have a look at:
http://www.caroftheyear.org/pages/Voting03.htm
Mazda6 lost only by 20 points but there were a few strange things that really got my attention:
Making subtotals for big countries its very easy to notice that they've lost this contest on GB's hand!!!
It's something fishy about it ... all the rest of the Europe consider it to be No1 maybe No2 but none of them consider it the LAST of the seven as englishmen did. Is it the right hand one so bad. Or Mazda couldn't provide them with a right hand one for tests and they've tried to penalize this??!?
Holland and Italy also was very critical about the 6 ... making it loose 18 points with each. But at least for Italy it was 4/7 while for Holland was again almost the last one 6/7 :sarc :sarc :sarc
BTW 2 of the Swedish reviewers weren't very thrilled about 6 also ... but at least it was the 2nd car ;)
For France was somehow normal to vote their car :p
I guess that this award has also to do with a lot of lobying ... and Renault was obviously better in this. Renault is an European company!!! and it is producing all over Europe (France, Spain, Turkey) while Mazda is not.
YET? I've understood that Mazda2 will be produced in Europe, I guess in UK (so maybe brits try to fine Mazda for not bringing the 6 to UK plants??!?)
Waiting for your comments ...

that Renault looks ugly! how could it be the COTY. I certainly wouldnt buy it. no one will even look at the car as something special, dull and boring!
Mazda6 certainly attracts a lot of attentions on the street!
if someone has the money, I think they will choose the BMW or the Merc, Lexus or Mazda6, who cares about the COTY!

of coz, the European votes for the European cars!

I really don't think this has to do with it.

Also: the swedish journalists that voted weren't among the most well renowned we have...if u know what I mean...:sarc

In fact, many swedish motor journalists have praised the Mazda6 sky high.

Yeah, it really bugs me!

What bugs me, you might ask?

Well, that there is few (or only ONE) person per country who makes the decision. That can't give very realistic picture of all the journalists...

With so few, it is easier to "butter up" some of those journalists... :(

But anyways, Mazda6 came second and barely behind the hidious Megane. I wouldn't stare at the trophies too much, but it is nice to know that your car or future car is good in most peoples eyes, even the journalists / critics.

We should perhaps be glad that M6 didn't win "car of the year" in europe, bear in mind the earlier record for winners with som exceptions like Peugeot 307...

What exactly did you mean by that.
I've just had a look through last years winners and there were some nice cars: Peugeot 307, Alfa 147, 156; Focus
One think that they cannot get into this is:
RELIABILITY of the model, plus its handling in time.
And here we have in Mazda a winner again (probably after Toyota, as the statistics said but way ahead the German and French cars).
Am I right? (of course I am ;) )

Well, after all it just important in commercial sense...
Helps dealers to sell a car more easy I guess.

In that sense, it is good that Mazda didn't win. I don't want all my neighbours to have same looking car. That makes driving to office a bit difficult in mornings. :p

But on the other hand, a COTY award helps clearing the "is my car better than neighbors/friends"? without needing too many specs arguments or subjective stuff.
It's like everybody agrees know (after BMW had won so many COTY awards) that a beemer is a CAR.
So, we know that Mazda6 is a CAR but not everyone agrees.
YET.

Yeah, especially if you look at the options... They must have a really bad taste.
Or maybe they don't drive the cars? Maybe they just ask which brand wants to pay more for points?

That makes sense... After all, I don't see new Megane being any hit, if it wasn't the Car of the year. But Mazda6 I believe will be hit anyways - right? Any sense in this?

So much bad taste ...
And all of them!!?? Even the French got one who admited that 6 is better than the Megane2.
Maybe ... the brits got another car (not a 6) for testing :p :sarc :p

Isn't car of the year something they give to cars that have made a big difference. Like the Megane.. OK it is not nice looking, but it a fresh design and dares to stick out. Honestly, the M6 is a good looking car, but it's nothing revolutinary about it. It's just another family car with a sporty tuch, like Alfa 156, SAAB 9-3, BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and others... What it have done is raise Mazda as a brand to new height, that's even the reason that it earned some of it's prices. Nothing bad in that.

But it hasn't really changed anything for the future of car manufacturing or design.

The Megane for example is a VERY safe car (5 stars in EuroNCAP); when regarding it's small size.

And these awards are mostly given by journalists. They see things in a different way. Any sane person would for example give Mazda6 some kind of design award. But they don't really care if the car LOOKS good. It's how outstanding and "new" the design is that matters.

The other car, that I think deserved the award exept M6 is the Volvo XC90. Mostly because they actually laid some effort in making the car crach safe, not just to the riders in the car but to riders in other cars as well. But I guess promoting "SUV"s are seen as taboo...

Yes and NO.
It is "Car of the year" just like it is said...
A best new car of a certain year.

But yes in that aspect, that they DO give more points for cars which have something innovative. Not for cars which "dare to look stupid or horrible"... If that was the case Humphrey should have won it atleas once. :p

I believe that new Megane has something innovative - don't know exactly what, not interested really, it looks so bad that I prefer to stay far away from it. ;)

But the overall package should matter there also in points...

Best would be IF someone could find the rulebook for this, what are they supposed to look in a car exactly when desiding which car is better than other for the COTY.

Might be... And that made them think: "this is a pure Mondeo copy, why do those other people say it has anything different? I will give only 2 points!".
