By now, it is well established that Mazda and Toyota are working together. Toyota has been using the Mazda 2 platform for their Yaris sedan (previously the Scion iA) and are currently building a joint manufacturing plant in the US. We also know that it was recently announced that Mazda is working on a new platform that will include a SkyActiv based inline 6 engine.

New rumors are now surfacing that the Mazda 6 with an I-6 will exist and will share its platform with a new Laxus RC model due out in 2022. Additionally there may be a model above the RC that will also share the new 6 architecture. It's very possible Mazda will be providing the engine and chassis while Toyota provides the mild hybrid 48V electrical system.

If true, Mazda been doing some major covert operations the past few years, lol. CEO already confirmed they indeed have a Electric car coming out in 2020 for the EU market, will it make it to the U.S. market? Now this rumor about a in-line 6 RWD Mazda platform being shared with Toyota/Lexus sounds bonkers but I like.

Mazda has to do something with Hybrid and EV tech or else they won't be able to sell in California. Believe that at least 5% of an automaker's offering has to be hybrid or EV by July 1 2020 here.
