I'm a new owner of a 2004 Mazda 6i and a new member of this web page. Everything with my car has been good until the last couple of weeks. First i noticed the car was knocking into second gear, but it wasn't too hard and wasn't every time either so i've just been keeping an eye on it. Today is a whole different story. I was on the highway doing 80mph and would periodically take my foot off the gas and the car would drastically slow down, when i would step on the gas again it would jump. I got off the highway to get gas and when i came to a complete stop the engine was reving like i had my foot on the gas and the car was in third gear. I took my foot off the brake and the car took off without my foot on the gas, it went from first to second, to third gear without me ever stepping on the gas. When i put my foot on the brake, the car doesn't want to slow down or stop, it does slow down and stop, but i have to jam on the brakes, the engine reving and surging the whole time. I drove the car home and once not on the highway the car drives terrible, surging, accelerating on its own, maintaining 40mph without me puttin my foot on the gas. Anyway, i do'nt know much about cars and am a new mazda owner, does anyone have any idea what is goin on with my car? My feeling is that it's the tranny, but again, i don't know much about cars. any help would be appreciated. thanks

It's a toss-up..... If your Check Engine light is on, I'd say get it scanned. But that means driving somewhere, and well...

If it was me and I had no scanner, it sounds stupid, but I would disconnect your battery. Both terminals- disconnect the + first, but also make it the first one when you hook it back up.

I'd say your throttle body is most likely acting-up. Can't recall off the top of my head if yours has a cable, or is throttle-by-wire....
