Hello Paul, the flashes are a code indicating which air bad is at fault, on my 2007 Speed 6 the flashes went 1 flash then a pause then 7 flashes for code 17 which was a defective drivers side (steering wheel) airbag (I did have both the driver‘s side and passenger’s replaced maybe 3 or 4 years ago as part of the Takata recall). Unfortunately my speed had other problems (burned almost as much oil as fuel !) and was beyond economical repair. Found a great deal on a used 2017 GT with manuals transmission and sadfully had to trade her in.

Count the number of flashes and then query the other good folks on this super web site, maybe some one has the manual or knows of the references for the codes.

If you didnt have the recall done, do it. It can go off and kill you with shrapnel (apparently).

Wow, this a really late replacement but worked out well in this case! Prior owner obviously ignored the notices from Mazda for years on this.
Here is another air bag issue I was involved in with our 2006 Mazda 3 GT we had. It got airbag lite, it blinked yellow but don't remember an irregular blink as a code. I couldn't figure it out so took to Mazda, it was the clock spring in the steering wheel center section. The so called clock spring transfers all the commands from the steering wheel buttons to their respective destinations on a flat wire tape wound up like a clock spring so the drivers commands can follow the lock to lock of the steering wheel. A Mazda rep was dealing with issues with my 2007 MS6 at the time so I wangled a discount from him on the device, it was an outrageous price I remember, around $150 for plastic, got it for around $132 and installed it myself!
For curiosity sake I just cked the Internet on that part. Seems I got a good deal after all, first glance with out shopping, Parts Geek showed up for $225. Must be inflation as I replaced it about 10 years ago.

The best part about this was the "everything done at no charge" part. Great news, man.
