Today was tire rotation and oil change day. When I went to lower the rear end, I notice some fluid on the rear diff. Upon crawling under the car, I see the passenger side rear axle seal is leaking. My warranty expired in July and the car has 35,000 miles on it. I called the dealer I take our cars to asking for a quote, but haven't heard back yet.

I did a search on here quickly and have a couple different procedures noted. So, how hard is this to do myself as a semi-competent shade-tree mechanic? I changed several axles (and wheel bearings) in my 98 Grand Prix GT, so I have some experiences with these bastids. Will I need a special tool to press the seal in evenly?

At least my Redline fluid has 23,000 miles on it, so it's not totally new and a waste.

i have 6 seals and 5 axle itself replaced during the warranty period and after they voided mine, i installed the rear diff mount and the problem went away...

there are serveral members here replace the axle by themself and it looks like a little bit of work since you have to remove couple of things....
Since you have a little bit of Experiences with this then i don't think the job is hard for you at all....

You can do it. You'll have to remove the trailing link and knuckle assembly. Then, pull the driveshaft. You'll need a new retainer clip and seal for the replacement.

The dealership replaced a bad wheel bearing on that side two years ago, so hopefully some things won't be too hard to break loose. Now I just need to find the part numbers.
