A lot of the information for the gen 1 is hidden behind a bunch of dead links like this one >https://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=82047<. Is there way to change the link to actually find the thread or are they lost? Am I stuck using the crappy search bar?

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of if the thread is completely gone, unfortunately. You can always try to find some keywords from it by using Google's built-in search functions like this:

"something I want to search for site:forum.mazda6club.com"

That, without quotes, will search only this website for anything it can find.

Have you tried the Wayback Machine? If you have a specific thread in mind - like the link you provided as an example - you can paste it into their search bar and it will return results for all of the dates they've indexed. Here's what your example turned up:

Dang! I figured they wouldn't have crawled our website since we're relatively small all things considered. Nice.

I was a little surprised too, but I figured it was worth a shot. The dates are pretty limited, but it's better than nothing.
