New to the forum - just picked up a 2008 Mazda 6 with the 2.3 liter engine that has a spun rod bearing.

Trying to determine if this 2008 is a gen1 or a gen2 - how do you decide given the model year ranges overlap at 2008?

First order of business is to pull the engine and tear it down to determine if it is worth saving. Everything I read says to pull the transmission with the engine but I get the impression that the reason is clutch related and this car is an automatic. Can't I unbolt the converter from the flex plate and just leave the transmission in place?

Any insight would be appreciated, nothing like getting to the point of pulling the engine and suddenly realizing that plan A will not work and the transmission must come out at the same time.

Welcome aboard.

Your car is a gen 1. Actually, we call them gen 1.5. There was a face-lift in 2006.

^^ What he said.

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, I have little to no experience with both the 2.3L and automatics of that generation - hopefully someone else can help you out :)

Should I be posting the technical question in a different forum? I know this is for Newbees (which is me for sure) but may not be the place to get answers about technical questions.

The newbie area is sort of a catch all so it's fine, but it doesn't hurt to post it with full details in the appropriate forum :)
